- Title:
- Associate Head Coach
With emphasis on helping to oversee the operations of the Cal Poly men’s basketball program, strengthening offensive play, developing a strategic international recruiting plan and comprehensive scout work, Paul Mrozik is in his second season as the program’s associate head coach.
Mrozik arrived at Cal Poly in June 2016 after building Mountain Mission School (Grundy, Va.) into a national powerhouse. Ranked continuously among MaxPreps.com's top 100 high school programs during the 2015-16 season and as high as No. 26, Mountain Mission School finished 29-8. Mrozik’s final Mountain Mission School squad featured six players who signed National Letters of Intent with Division I programs.
“Paul has a nice balance of on-floor coaching experience and international recruiting,” ninth-year Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero said. “His knowledge, passion and professionalism was well documented at Mountain Mission School. He’s developed players into elite national recruits and has a solid in-game coaching background.
“Paul has the work ethic, temperament and contacts that will grow our program.”
Having coached at the professional, collegiate and high school levels and coached more than 30 players who went on to play professionally in the United States and Europe, Mrozik spent the 2011-12 season at Liberty as a graduate assistant. A native of Poland, Mrozik served as the head coach at professional first division club Basket Kwidzyn (2009-10) and an assistant coach at Polonia 2011 Warsaw (2010-11). Valparaiso’s Director of Basketball Operations during the 2008-09 season while earning his first master’s degree, Mrozik spent the 2005-06 term doing scout work in Poland after founding and directing the Warsaw-based Polish Shootout Camp series from 2002-08.
Twice Mrozik has served as the head coach of Athletes in Action teams, first directing a Polish squad in Macedonia in 2011 before leading a United States side to Poland in 2012. Among the players Mrozik coached on tours are Miami Heat guard Josh Richardson, former Brooklyn Nets forward Cory Jefferson and former New York Knicks guard Toure' Murry.
As a player, Mrozik competed for Western Nebraska Community College. As a freshman, he averaged 15.4 points per game to help the program to a top 25 national showing and appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament. He then averaged 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore captain.
Mrozik and his wife, Gosia, have two children: Filip (13), and Liliana (6).
