With attention focused toward skill development, opponent scouting and team operations, BJ Andrews is in his third season as an assistant coach with the Cal Poly men’s basketball program.
Also an assistant to Cal Poly head coach Mike DeGeorge at Division II Colorado Mesa (2023-24), Andrews has helped develop the Mustangs into one of the nation’s formidable offensive threats.
Cal Poly finished the 2024-25 campaign third among 355 NCAA Division I sides with 11.5 three-pointers per game and set new program single season records for total points, three-pointers and field goals to reach its first Big West Championship semifinal in 11 years. Last season, Cal Poly was 10th nationally at 10.8 three-pointers per game, 19th with 358 total three-pointers and recorded the program’s highest Big West victory total in 13 seasons.
With Andrews, the Mustangs have twice averaged 82.1 points per game while scoring 90-plus points 20 times. Individually, Cal Poly has enjoyed four All-Big West selections in two years with Andrews after producing just four in the previous six seasons.
“BJ has a tremendous ability to connect with people,” DeGeorge said. “Basketball has taken him across the country and overseas and his ability to adapt to a new setting and connect with people from all backgrounds is a great strength. He brings love for the game and a commitment to our player’s development on the court and in their lives. Those attributes help him build great relationships and be impactful in our player’s lives on a daily basis.”
With DeGeorge at Colorado Mesa during the final 2023-24 season, Andrews helped the Mavericks finish 29-5 overall and capture the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title with a 21-1 mark. Five Mavericks earned All-RMAC praise as Colorado Mesa qualified for a fifth successive NCAA Tournament and reached the Sweet 16 for the second time in three seasons.
Prior to his year at Colorado Mesa, Andrews was an assistant at San Diego City College (2021-23) where his duties included opponent scouting, developing individual player workouts and recruiting. During his second season at SDCC, the Knights reached the CCCAA SoCal Regional semifinals.
As a player, Andrews starred at Division II Clarion University of Pennsylvania from 2013-17. Named 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and a 2016-17 All-PSAC first team honoree, Andrews remains fourth all-time in program history with 3,017 minutes played, fifth with 346 free throws and 466 free throws attempted, sixth with 98 starts and 10th with 108 appearances and 135 three-pointers.
A native of Baltimore, Andrews graduated from Clarion with a bachelor’s in marketing and a minor in sociology, played professionally in Ireland for two years and Cyprus for one. While in Dublin, he began his coaching career with a high school girl’s program.
Following his playing days, Andrews was a teacher and the associate head coach at Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, S.C), a top-20 program within the state.
