Relief Pitcher Michael Clark Named Big West Pitcher of the Week

Relief Pitcher Michael Clark Named Big West Pitcher of the Week
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Michael Clark, who earned three saves in three opportunities to help Cal Poly sweep CSUN last weekend, was honored three times Monday.

The senior right-handed pitcher from Rohnert Park, Calif., has been selected as the Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.,

Clark also was named Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week and was honored by College Sports Madness as its Big West Player of the Week.

The Cardinal Newman High School graduate preserved Cal Poly's 2-1, 3-1 and 4-2 triumphs by pitching six scoreless, hitless innings inside Baggett Stadium. Clark struck out nine and walked just one for his fourth, fifth and sixth saves of the year.

As a result, Cal Poly is in first place alone in the Big West with a 3-0 mark, the first time the Mustangs have opened conference play with a sweep since going 3-0 against UC Davis in 2014, the year Cal Poly captured its lone Big West championship.

In Friday's series opener, Clark fanned six Matadors in 3 2/3 innings of work. He struck out two more CSUN hitters in the ninth inning of Saturday's 3-1 series-clinching win and went 1 1/3 innings in Sunday's sweep-clinching victory.

Clark now owns a 2.49 ERA for the year and is tied for second in the Big West in saves.

Clark also was named Big West Pitcher of the Week in early April 2017 after earning two wins in relief at UC Irvine with six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.

Named Big West Field Player of the Week was UC Santa Barbara junior catcher Eric Yang as he went 7-for-14 at the plate to lead the Gauchos to a series win over defending conference champion Cal State Fullerton at Goodwin Field. Yang scored four runs and knocked in six more, playing a role in 10 of UCSB's 22 runs during the series.
