FULLERTON, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s soccer team dropped its Big West road opener on Wednesday night, falling 1-0 in a tight battle at Cal State Fullerton.
“A challenging result on the road, I felt like we could have earned more from this game,” head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match, “… I felt like based on what we did in that second half that we could’ve gotten something out of it, not sure a win, but definitely a tie, so disappointed but hopefully we can take some lessons from this here.”
The Titans scored the match’s lone goal in the seventh minute. CSUF played a corner kick short and then fed a cross from just inside the box in front of the net that went off Skye Johnson’s chest and past junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski.
Cal Poly chased the game the rest of the way, desperately trying to find the back of the net.
The Mustangs started to find their way in the second half as junior Isis Salazar-Ortega and freshman Kate Nunes helped raise the team’s intensity offensively.
Senior Annika Smith fired a header on frame in the 70th minute and then in the 81st minute sent a blistering header off a corner kick just over the crossbar. The Big West Offensive Player of the Year would earn one more dangerous chance offensively down the stretch. In the 89th minute, she sent a shot on goal off a corner that was blocked and turned away by a Cal State Fullerton defender standing right on the goal line.
“It comes down to one moment and we were unfortunately on the wrong end of it today,” Silva said.
Making her 28th consecutive start in net, Porubski made six saves. Smith finished with a team-high four shots.
After Wednesday's results, Cal Poly (4-4-3, 1-1-1 Big West) currently sits in a four-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings through three Big West matches.
The Mustangs continue their Southern California road trip, visiting UC San Diego at 6 p.m. Saturday. The match can be seen live on ESPN+.
