LA JOLLA, Calif. — Junior Miah Thomas buried her sixth goal of the season and junior goalkeeper Shannon Porubski made a penalty kick save in the 86th minute to preserve a 1-0 victory for the Cal Poly women’s soccer team on Saturday night at UC San Diego.
The hard-fought win at Triton Soccer Stadium allowed the Mustangs (5-4-3, 2-1-1 Big West) to move into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings with 7 points through four matches. They sit just 1 point behind UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Fullerton and Utah Valley, who are all tied for first place with 8 points.
“Three big points on the road against a really good UC San Diego side,” head coach Bernardo Silva said after the match, “… I thought we played our game plan and our scout to perfection, I thought our girls were fantastic in the execution.”
Cal Poly got on the board early when junior Isis Salazar-Ortega drew a foul in the box less than four minutes into the match. Thomas, the team’s penalty kick specialist, stepped to the spot and buried a shot to the bottom left post to convert her fourth penalty kick goal of the season. Her six goals lead the team and tied for the third most in the conference.
The Mustangs clung to that 1-0 advantage for the remainder of the first half, and in the final 45 minutes did everything they could defensively to prevent the Tritons (5-3-4, 1-1-2 BW) from finding the back of the net.
In the second half, senior Annika Smith and sophomore Kenzie Herzing both fired shots on goal and with less than five minutes remaining, Cal Poly was called for a foul in the box. UC San Diego’s Ava Tibor stepped up to take the penalty kick and Porubski came through in the clutch, diving to her left to make a save that would ultimately seal the Mustangs’ victory.
Porubski finished with three saves in the match to secure her third shutout of the season and the 12th of her career.
Cal Poly returns home next Saturday, Oct. 10, to host Utah Valley at 6 p.m. for Pride Night. You can purchase tickets HERE.
