EUGENE, Ore. — Senior Lexi Evans secured First Team All-American honors in the women’s pole vault during Day 2 of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
The first Cal Poly female to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in nine years, Evans took center stage for the Mustangs on Thursday and shined.
The San Diego, Calif. native cleared the first three bars she jumped at all on the first attempt. Evans soared over 13 feet, 11 inches (4.24 meters) and 14 feet, 4.75 inches (4.39 meters) before taking aim at 14-8.75 (4.49m), flying over the bar to establish a new outdoor lifetime best in the pole vault and shatter her own school and conference records in the event.
The sensational start to the competition with no misses across her first three bars put the four-time NCAA West Prelims qualifier in a great position for the rest of the event. She was unable to clear the bar at 14-10.75 (4.54m) — which would have been a new all-around lifetime best — on her three attempts, but earned a seventh-place finish to grab First Team All-American honors for the first time in her career.
Evans is the first Mustang on the women’s side to earn First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since Jasmine Pickett in 2011 (seventh, women’s triple jump). She is just the third Mustang ever to secure First Team All-American honors in the women’s pole vault outdoors, joining Bianca Maran (1998) and Paula Serrano (1998, 1999).
The First Team honor outdoors comes just three months after Evans captured 12th at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March to grab Second Team All-American praise. She joins Paula Serrano (1999) as the only two Mustangs in program history to earn All-American honors in the women’s pole vault indoors and outdoors during the same season.
Evans’ performance also allowed the Cal Poly women to score team points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the 14th time in program history and the first time since 2011 (tied for 60th, 2 points). With 2 team points, Cal Poly is currently tied for 31st in the team standings after the first day of competition for the women.
Evans is the 27th Division I First Team All-American outdoors in the history of the women’s program.
The three-time Big West pole vault champion finishes her Cal Poly career as a two-time All-American and the indoor and outdoor school record holder in the women’s pole vault.
Chris Caudillo will race in the men’s 1,500-meter final at 5:12 p.m. Friday to wrap up the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the Mustangs. You can watch the race live on ESPN2 HERE.
