EUGENE, Ore. — Junior Chris Caudillo capped off a strong showing by the Cal Poly track and field team at the NCAA Outdoor Championships by securing First Team All-American honors in the men’s 1,500-meter on Friday night.
The Clovis, Calif. native captured seventh in the men’s 1,500 final, crossing the line in 3:38.06 to earn All-American honors for the first time in his first nationals appearance.
Caudillo is the second Mustang in program history to secure First Team All-American honors in the men’s 1,500 and the first since Danny Aldridge in 1979.
About six weeks ago, Caudillo was planning on redshirting this outdoor season, but a potential five-in-five eligibility model the NCAA is looking at adopting changed those plans, and now the 1,500 school record holder is an All-American.
Caudillo’s performance allowed him to score 2 points for the Cal Poly men. Those 2 points coupled with Travis Martin’s 4 points he earned by placing fifth in the men’s hammer throw on Wednesday allowed the Mustangs to end the meet with 6 points and finish in a tie for 37th place as a team for the second straight year. It’s tied for the Mustangs’ fifth highest team finish ever at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Martin and Lexi Evans (women’s pole vault) also grabbed First Team All-American honors during the meet, marking the eighth time in program history the Mustangs have boasted at least three outdoor First Team All-Americans during a season across the men’s and women’s teams. It’s the first time in 21 years Cal Poly has achieved the feat.
Ben Feyrer (men’s pole vault) and Carson Smith (men’s 1,500-meter) both received Honorable Mention All-American praise during the meet, allowing Cal Poly to finish with a new Division I program record five outdoor All-Americans between the men’s and women’s teams.
