EUGENE, Ore. — Travis Martin earned First Team All-American honors in the men’s hammer throw and Chris Caudillo advanced to the 1,500-meter final to highlight a stellar first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the Cal Poly track and field team on Wednesday at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field.
Martin, Caudillo, Ben Feyrer and Carson Smith all competed for the Mustangs on the opening day of the men’s competition at nationals.
Martin had the performance of the day, capturing fifth in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 237 feet, 9 inches (72.46 meters) to secure First Team All-American honors. The San Jose, Calif. native earned a spot in the nine-man final in the event by taking first in Flight 1. He was the only athlete in Flight 1 to record a mark over 70 meters.
With the finish, Martin became the first two-time All-American in the men’s hammer throw in program history. Last year, the 2026 Big West champion was just 1 inch away from qualifying for the NCAA Final in the event, placing 10th (224-1; 68.31m) to secure Second Team All-American honors. Martin’s performance in his final meet as a Mustang, allowed him to score 4 points for Cal Poly, marking the 14th time the Mustang men have scored team points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the Division I era.
Caudillo punched his ticket to the men’s 1,500 final by earning a big Q, running the fifth fastest time overall across the two 1,500 semifinal heats (3:36.30) to secure one of the 12 spots. The Clovis, Calif. native is the first Mustang since Danny Aldridge in 1979 to qualify for the NCAA Division I Final in the men’s 1,500. The 1,500 school record holder races in the NCAA Final at 5:12 p.m. Friday and will be looking to become Cal Poly’s 11th outdoor Division I national champion and first since Sharon Day-Monroe in 2005 (women’s high jump). The 1,500 final will be streamed live on ESPN2 HERE.
Smith also raced in the 1,500 semifinals on Wednesday, placing 21st out of 24 runners (3:41.52) to grab Honorable Mention All-American praise. Making his first and only appearance at the NCAA Championships, Smith finishes his career as a five-time All-Big West honoree and owns the third-fastest time in school history in both the men’s 800 and 1,500. He is the third Mustang in Division I program history to receive All-American honors in the men’s 1,500.
The first underclassman to qualify for NCAAs in three years for the Mustangs, Feyrer finished in a tie for 19th in the men’s pole vault to take home Honorable Mention All-American praise in his first NCAA appearance. The Davis, Calif. native cleared the opening bar (17 feet, 0.75 inches; 5.20 meters) on his first attempt, made it over the second bar (17-6.5 inches; 5.35m) on his final attempt and failed to clear 18-0.5 (5.50m), which would have been a new lifetime best. Feyrer is the first Mustang since John Prader in 2012 (14th) to earn All-American accolades in the men’s pole vault and just the fifth ever. The sophomore won the Big West title this year and recorded the seventh-best mark in school history at NCAA West Prelims to qualify for nationals.
The first Cal Poly female to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in nine years, senior Lexi Evans is the only Mustang that will be in action on Day 2 of the meet Thursday. She competes in the women’s pole vault final at 5:35 p.m. live on ESPN+.
