CLOVIS, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field team wrapped up competition at the two-day Fresno State Invitational on Saturday, securing six more event victories at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.
A total of 40 Mustangs were in action on Saturday during the penultimate weekend of regular season competition for the team.
During the opening day of the meet Friday at Fresno State’s Warmerdam Field, freshman Golda Demby recorded the second best mark in school history in the women’s hammer throw (188 feet, 3 inches; 57.39 meters) while Travis Martin won the men’s hammer throw with a facility record (231 feet, 10 inches; 70.68 meters). Cal Poly carried the momentum from those performances into the final day of competition Saturday.
Sophomore Ava Simos was responsible for the lone individual all-time top 10 mark recorded for the Mustangs on Saturday, running a personal best of 11.67 seconds in the women’s 100-meter to place third and improve her No. 6 time in school history. It’s her second straight week posting a lifetime best in the event.
Simos, running the second leg, also helped the Mustangs post the third-fastest time in school history in the women’s 4x100-meter relay (45.31 seconds). Desie Armstrong, Cadence Roy-Williams and Tayhlore Hoagland ran the other three legs on the relay, which finished third at the meet.
The Cal Poly women won three events on Saturday. Junior Taylor Hofland captured first in the shot put with a mark of 47 feet, 7 inches, redshirt junior Camrenne Genilla secured the top spot in the javelin with a throw of 151 feet, 11 inches and senior Lexi Evans took first in the pole vault (13 feet, 8.25 inches).
In the women’s 400 hurdles, junior Kalia Estes recorded a lifetime best of 1:00.71 to earn second, the 12th-fastest time in school history. Sophomores Avery Adelman (1:01.36) and Kaira Burrage (1:01.44) placed third and fourth respectively with times that were just off their personal bests. Junior Astrid Teran also took second in the women’s pole vault.
On the men’s side, the Mustangs secured three event wins as well. Redshirt sophomore Ben Kin Ho Tsang won the men’s 400 hurdles (53.18 seconds), sophomore Vincent Atilano finished first in the 400 (47.93 seconds) and sophomore Ben Feyrer captured the top spot in the pole vault (17 feet). Redshirt junior Aiden Pastorian, the defending Big West Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, grabbed second in the shot put (55-6.5).
Cal Poly will send over 10 distance runners to the Franson Last Chance Invite hosted by Azusa Pacific this coming Friday and Saturday to wrap up regular season action. The multi-event portion of the Big West Championships, which consist of the heptathlon and decathlon, are set to be contested on those two days as well, but the Mustangs are not expected to have any athletes compete in it for the second straight year. The full Big West Track & Field Championship meet will be held on May 15-16 at Long Beach State’s Jack Rose Track.
