FRESNO, Calif. — Golda Demby, Bryce Kueker and Dheeraj Gurusamy all recorded top 10 marks in program history for the Cal Poly track and field team during the Payton Jordan Invitational and the first day of the Fresno State Invite on Friday.
Demby was one of three Cal Poly hammer throwers that competed on the first day of the Fresno State Invite, along with Travis Martin and Gracelyn Brown. The rest of the events at the meet will be contested on Saturday at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium with over 30 Mustangs slated to be in action.
Demby stole the spotlight at Fresno State’s Warmerdam Field on Friday, recording a significant lifetime best in the women’s hammer throw of 188 feet, 3 inches (57.39 meters). The mark allowed the Hollister, Calif. native to climb to No. 2 in school history in the event, only trailing Emily Hallett’s 2022 school record (200-11; 61.23 meters). It was an over 7-foot personal best for Demby and the mark currently is the third best recorded in the Big West this season and No. 48 in the West Region. She placed fourth in the event with the performance.
On the men’s side, Martin shattered the Warmerdam Field facility record in the hammer throw with a mark of 231 feet, 10 inches (70.68 meters) to capture first. The school record holder currently ranks No. 3 in the West Region and No. 4 in the nation this season with a mark of 248-1 (75.62m).
Up in the Bay on Friday night, 10 Cal Poly distance runners hit the track to take part in the one-day Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford. Kueker and Gurusamy both had standout performances in Section 1 of the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Making his season debut, Kueker scorched the track and crossed the finish line in an impressive time of 8:36.07, a new personal best that improved his No. 3 mark in school history. The time ranks No. 13 in the West Region this season and No. 23 in Division I. It’s also the fastest ran in the Big West this year.
Gurusamy laid down a lifetime best of his own in the event, finishing in 8:47.66. It’s the eighth fastest time in school history, No. 2 in the Big West and No. 34 in the West Region this season. The Livermore, Calif. native improved his personal best by nearly four seconds.
On the women’s side at the meet, redshirt freshman Nikki Bridges ran a lifetime best in the 5,000-meter (16:37.34), and Isabel Sanchez (10:43.68) and Sydney Sundgren (10:43.69) posted strong times in the 3,000 steeplechase.
