FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Senior Lexi Evans officially put a bow on the indoor track and field season for the Mustangs on Saturday, securing Second Team All-American honors in the women’s pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Evans tied for 12th in the elite field of 16 athletes. She cleared the opening height of 13 feet, 11.75 inches (4.26m) on her final attempt, before making it over the second bar on her first attempt (14-5.5/4.41m). Then at the third bar of 14-9.5 (4.51m), Evans wasn’t unable to clear it ending her first NCAA Championship appearance. The bar of 14-9.5 would have matched her personal best, which she posted a month ago at the Husky Classic to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
With the finish, Evans became the first Mustang in 26 years to earn All-American honors in the women’s indoor pole vault, and just the third ever joining Paula Serrano (second 1999, third 2000) and Shannon Flett (eighth 2000).
The showing capped off a remarkable indoor season for the San Diego native. After obliterating the indoor pole vault school record by 11 inches at the UW Invite on Jan. 31 to open her final indoor season, Evans broke her own school record two weeks later at the same facility with an impressive mark of 14-9.5 (4.51m).
Evans is the school record holder in both the women’s indoor and outdoor pole vault, and is a three-time NCAA West Preliminaries qualifier outdoors.
Evans’ All-American finish coupled with teammate Tatiana Cornejo’s Second Team All-American result in the women’s mile on Friday allowed the Cal Poly women’s track and field program to finish with multiple All-Americans indoors during a season for the first time since 2005 and the fifth time overall.
