FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Tatiana Cornejo wrapped up an historic indoor track & field season Friday at the NCAA Indoor Championships held inside the University of Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Center.
Making her first NCAA appearance, Cornejo earned Second Team All-American honors, placing 16th in the semifinals of the women’s mile.
The Elk Grove, Calif. is the first Mustang on the women’s side to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships since two-time Olympian Sharon Day-Monroe placed second in the high jump in 2008.
Cornejo is also the first Mustang in program history, male or female, to secure All-American honors in the mile. The 2024 Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Year is the fourth Mustang on the women’s side to earn All-American honors indoors in an event on the track and the first since Maggie Vessey took sixth in the 800-meter in 2003.
The All-American praise capped off a sensational indoor season for the two-time NCAA West Prelims qualifier. Cornejo shattered a pair of school records, blowing past a 43-year-old record in the women’s indoor 3,000 (9:07.61) at the Husky Classic on Feb. 13 and then soaring past a 39-year-old program record in the women’s mile at the Saucony Battle for Boston on Feb. 22 (4:29.90). The mile time was the 22nd fastest ran in the NCAA this season and the performance allowed her to qualify for her first NCAA Championship meet.
This indoor season, Cornejo improved her personal best in the mile by over 26 seconds and her PR in the 3,000 by over 5.5 seconds.
Cornejo’s teammate, Lexi Evans, competes in the women’s pole vault final at the NCAA Indoor Championships at 2 p.m. Saturday. Live results for the meet are available HERE.
