LOS ANGELES, Calif. — After nearly two weeks since its last match, the Cal Poly women’s tennis team returned to the court in dramatic fashion on Saturday, earning a 4-3 come from behind victory at No. 50 Loyola Marymount.
After dropping the doubles point to open the dual, the Mustangs (3-3) found a way to rally, winning four of the six singles matches to take down the Lions (5-4).
Senior Alexandra Ozerets earned the dual clinching point for the Mustangs at the No. 4 singles spot. After senior Kennedy Buntrock suffered her first singles defeat this dual season in three sets at No. 1, it all came down to court No. 4 with the dual knotted up at 3-3. Ozerets won the first set in her match 6-1, before dropping the second 5-7. In the decisive third set, Ozerets and her opponent, Helene Schnack, went back-and-forth before Ozerets ultimately prevailed 7-5 to complete the thrilling comeback for the Mustangs.
The win allowed Ozerets to improve to 4-2 this season.
After the Lions won at No. 6 in singles to take a 2-0 lead, junior Natalie Lynch secured a straight-sets win at No. 5 to improve to 4-2 in singles on the year, and sophomore Jessica MacCallum provided one at No. 2 (6-0, 7-5) to help Cal Poly level the match at 2-2.
Junior Candela Aparisi won a tightly-contested match at No. 3 in straight sets (7-6 (8-6), 7-5) to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead before Buntrock fell at No. 1 to allow the Lions to force a winner-take-all at No. 4.
The victory was Cal Poly’s first over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 70 Hawai’i on March 26, 2025. It was also the highest ranked opponent the team had beaten since taking down No. 49 Sacramento State 4-3 on the road on Feb. 28, 2025.
Cal Poly continues its road trip on Sunday at 11 a.m. when they visit Big West foe CSUN.
