SAN LUIS OBISPO – Prior to closing the regular season with three successive ranked opponents, the Cal Poly football program hosts Utah Tech on Saturday, Oct. 24. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field on ESPN+ is 2 p.m. for Cal Poly (4-4, 3-2), which looks climb back into the Big Sky Conference title race after a 28-18 setback at Northern Colorado (Oct. 17). Cal Poly enters Saturday’s matchup with Utah Tech (0-7, 0-4) tied for fourth place in the Big Sky standings alongside No. 3 Montana State with the pair trailing co-leaders Weber State (5-3, 4-1) and No. 7 Northern Arizona (6-2, 4-1) by just a game. Featuring three of the Big Sky’s top five tacklers and – in junior running back Jaden Green – the nation’s leader for all-purpose yards per game, Cal Poly’s eight contests this fall have been decided by 5.9 points per game. Playing its fifth road matchup in the last seven outings, Utah Tech ranks last among Big Sky programs in points per game (14.9) and second from bottom in points conceded (42.9).
GRIGSBY CEMENTS PLACE UNDER CENTER
Named Mustang starting quarterback the day of Cal Poly’s 38-34, season-opening victory against Idaho (Aug. 28), Anthony Grigsby, Jr., accounted for all five of Cal Poly’s touchdowns and 319 passing yards versus the Vandals to earn Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week praise. He then averaged 220 passing yards per Cal Poly’s next seven matchups – including a 300-yard game at Northern Colorado and 249-yard effort at FBS San Jose State (Sept. 12). Having emerged as one of the top FCS offensive threats, Grigsby ranks 10th nationally with 16 passing touchdowns, 13th with 1,857 passing yards (exceeding his 2025 total after just 13 quarters this fall), 14th with 153 total completions, 29th with 232.1 passing yards per game and 31st with a 63.2 (153-for-242) percent completion percentage. Responsible for 116 of Cal Poly’s 225 points this season (52.0 percent), Grigsby has thrown just six interceptions in 242 attempts thus year.
THE GREEN ZONE
The national FCS leader with 163.5 all-purpose yards per game, junior running back Jaden Green also ranks sixth with 111.8 rushing yards per outing. Averaging 135.4 rushing yards during the last five games – including a 269-yard effort at Eastern Washington (Sept. 26) – Green’s seven touchdowns (six rushing, one receiving) – pace Cal Poly. An offseason transfer from Lehigh and Cal Poly’s primary kick returner, Green has twice rushed for a pair of touchdowns against Eastern Washington (Sept. 26) and Weber State (Oct. 3).
OLSON BACK IN BUSINESS
The Big Sky’s second leading tackler last fall, fifth-year linebacker Kenny Olson enters Saturday’s matchup with Utah Tech occupying the top spot and ranked 10th among FCS players with 74 total tackles. Producing a career best 16-tackle performance at Eastern Washington (Sept. 26), Olson also ranks 19th nationally with 9.2 tackles per game. Providing Cal Poly three of the Big Sky’s top five tacklers, Olson ranks 14th in program history with 269 career tackles.
MILLER TIME
Backed by a career high 12-tackle performance at San Jose State (Sept. 12), 11 versus San Diego (Sept. 19) at 10 at No. 16 Idaho State, senior defensive back RL Miller ranks fifth nationally with 44 solo tackles and 22nd with 65 total tackles. An offseason transfer from Fresno State, Miller has also intercepted a team best three passes this year.
BIG PLAY TAY
With not one (Aug. 28 versus Idaho) but two (Sept. 26 at Eastern Washington) game-winning touchdown receptions in the final minute this season, junior wide receiver Tayvion McCoy enters Saturday’s matchup against Utah Tech ranked fourth nationally with 696 total receiving yards, fifth with 48 receptions and 10th with 87.0 yards per game. An offseason transfer from Ventura College, McCoy co-leads Cal Poly alongside Fidel Pitts with four receiving touchdowns and has three 100-yard receiving games this year – including a collegiate high 170-yard performance in his Aug. 28 debut.
DOWN TO THE WIRE
Cal Poly’s eight games this season have been decided by an average of 5.9 points per contest with no outcome decided by more than 10 points. Cal Poly’s four wins? Just 4.0 with the Mustangs scoring the go-ahead, game-winning touchdown in the final minute three times. Cal Poly also lost a 42-34 double-overtime home decision to Weber State (Oct. 3). The largest lead held by any team through eight games was Cal Poly’s 24-7 third-quarter advantage against Central Washington (Sept. 5). Cal Poly’s eight games have also included 19 total lead changes.
SACK PACK
Only one Big Sky program – Weber State (18) – has produced more sacks than Cal Poly (15) with junior Jalonn Booth ranked 28th nationally with 4.5 sacks and sophomore Kaleb Pleis 35th at 4.0.
CAL POLY VERSUS UTAH TECH
Saturday’s matchup marks Cal Poly’s first against Utah Tech as Division I opponents. The Mustangs have faced the Utah Tech program just once prior, delivering a 44-14 home win against then-Division II Dixie State on Oct. 24, 2009.
