
Men's Tennis Shuts Out Saint Mary's for First Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men’s tennis team put on a show in its home opener, earning a 7-0 clean sweep over Saint Mary’s on Saturday while playing under the lights at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The emphatic victory was highlighted by five straight-set singles wins.
The Mustangs got the fans into the match early with a dominant showing in doubles. First, Raz Haviv and Jovan Lubbe rolled to a 6-2 win at the No. 1 doubles spot. Then at No. 3, Luc Hoeijmans and Leo Matthysen clinched the doubles point for Cal Poly with a 6-2 triumph of their own.
Jack Cross and Sean Kamyshev were leading their doubles match 5-3 at No. 2 when the point was clinched.
Cal Poly kept the momentum rolling in singles play as Lubbe coasted to a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 and Haviv cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 to put the Mustangs on the brink of clinching the dual victory with a 3-0 lead. Kamyshev did just that, grabbing a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Soon after Kamyshev’s clincher, Hoeijmans and Cross finished off straight set wins at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively to give Cal Poly a resounding 6-0 advantage.
Senior Aaron Eliscu completed the sweep for the Mustangs with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 triumph at No. 6.
The Mustangs continue their four-match homestand at 11 a.m. Monday when they host New Mexico at the Ronca Tennis Center.
