SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The indoor season gets into full swing for the Cal Poly track and field team this Friday and Saturday when the Mustangs head to Dempsey Indoor for the UW Preview.
The meet will mark the first of three trips to Seattle for Cal Poly this indoor season. Sophomores Ibzan Felix and Micah Grossman are the only Mustangs that will compete on Day 1 of the meet Friday when they race in the men’s 3,000-meter, while the remaining 30 athletes making the trip take center stage Saturday.
Live results for the meet are available HERE and a livestream is available on RunnerSpace+ with the purchase of a subscription.
Over a month ago, Chris Caudillo officially opened the indoor season for the Mustangs when he took part in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener held at Boston University’s Track & Tennis Center on Dec. 6. Caudillo laid down a remarkable performance in the men’s 5,000, running an all-around lifetime best of 13:35.05 to shatter the previous indoor school by over 23 seconds. The time was also faster than the current men’s outdoor 5,000 school record of 13:40.90.
The Mustangs will look to build off that showing this weekend when the rest of the team gets its indoor season underway. A total of 18 women and 14 men will compete in the meet for Cal Poly.
Among those competing for the Mustangs are Melody Nwagwu (women’s triple jump, long jump), Tatiana Cornejo (women’s mile), Madison Easter (women’s 60, 200), Tayhlore Hoagland (women’s 60, long jump), Avery Adelman (women’s 600), Elianah DeMange (women’s 600), Jordan Jackson (women’s 600), Vincent Atilano (men’s 60, 200), Alexander Franco (men’s 400), MacGregor TeSelle (men’s 60, 400), Carson Smith (men’s 1,000), Lewis Westwood (men’s 1,000), Ben Feyrer (men’s pole vault) and Aiden Pastorian (men’s shot put).
Nwagwu, the 2024 Big West Women’s Field Athlete of the Year, is entering her final season of track as she has no outdoor eligibility remaining. Outdoors, Nwagwu is a two-time Big West champion and a five-time All-Big West honoree, and ranks No. 2 and No. 4 in school history in the women’s long jump and triple jump respectively. Indoors, she is the school record holder in the long jump.
Cornejo is set to see her first action of the season after redshirting during cross country in the fall. The distance phenom is the indoor and outdoor school record holder in the women’s 5,000 and will run the mile on Saturday, an event she is currently ranked No. 5 in program history in.
Atilano, Franco, Feyrer, Smith, TeSelle and Westwood all qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries last year outdoors, and will be looking to get their 2026 track seasons off to a strong start this weekend. Atilano, Franco and TeSelle helped the men’s 4x400 relay qualify for the NCAA West Prelims for the first time in program history a year ago by shattering the school record in the event (3:06.72). TeSelle is the current school record in the men’s indoor 60 and 200.
Jackson, the current school record holder in the women’s indoor 400, will run the 600 for the first time on Saturday.
During last year's indoor track & field season, the Mustangs broke 13 school records between the men's and women's teams and posted 41 new top five marks in program history. Cal Poly is expecting to record a handful of top marks in school history in Seattle this weekend.
Cal Poly heads back to Seattle on Jan. 30-31 to take part in the UW Invitational and Mile City inside Dempsey Indoor.
