SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore Hamad Mousa (above) led four Mustangs in double-digit scoring figures with a game high 24 points Saturday afternoon as the Cal Poly men’s basketball program – trailing UC Davis by as much as 14 and for the initial 35 minutes – overturned a 10-point halftime deficit for an 84-78 victory inside Mott Athletics Center.
Guards Peter Bandelj (14 points), Cayden Ward (13) and Jake Davis (12) accompanied Mousa in the scoring column for Cal Poly (7-11, 3-3), which took its first lead Saturday with four minutes remaining following a Mousa floater in the lane (right).
UC Davis (9-7, 2-3) tied the matchup once down the stretch and three free throws from Aggies guard Connor Sevilla with 83 seconds remaining cut Cal Poly’s late lead to 79-78. After Ward missed an attempt at the rim with a minute to go, however, UC Davis committed a shot clock violation. With the Aggies forced to foul, Cal Poly knocked down five of six free throw attempts to seal the win.
The Mustangs kept UC Davis without a field goal for the final five-and-a-half minutes.
Playing a combined four minutes this year entering Saturday’s matchup, junior guard Jackson Mosley scored a career high eight points in a collegiate best 22-minute performance for Cal Poly.

UC Davis opened Saturday’s matchup shooting 72.7 (8-for-11) percent from the floor and led 22-10 after six minutes. Cal Poly twice cut its first-half deficit to six points, but with the Mustangs sinking just three three-pointers in 19 attempts, the hosts trailed at the break, 40-30.
The Aggies stretched their second half lead to 46-34 with 16 minutes to go before Davis hit a three-pointer, Mosley recorded a layup and freshman guard Austin Goode drained another three-pointer to cut the gap to four.
Cal Poly then closed within a solitary point three times before Mousa deadlocked the matchup at 70-70 with two free throws.

- Up Next: Cal Poly completes its two-game Big West home stand against Hawai’i on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
- With his 17th double-digit scoring game in as many appearances, Hamad Mousa maintained the Big West scoring lead at 21.8 points per game.
- Mousa also grabbed a game high 10 rebounds to cement a third collegiate double-double.
- Cayden Ward now ranks eighth among Big West scorers (15.3 points per game) while Peter Bandelj is ninth (15.0).
- Cal Poly’s 92.9 (26-for-28) percent free throw mark was the second highest total of the season.
