
Men’s Tennis Enjoys Strong Singles Run at Sherwood Collegiate Cup

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — The Mustangs returned home from the prestigious Sherwood Country Club with a sense of success after compiling a 14-8 singles record against players from some of the nation's top programs.
The new-look Mustangs roster had an early-season showcase at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Westlake Village from Sept. 26-28. The team was represented by Jovan Lubbe, Raz Haviv, Luc Hoeijmans, Sean Kamyshev, Denzel Seetso, and (Jack) John Cross. The tournament field featured Big West rival UC Santa Barbara and a quartet of top-25 powerhouses: Cal, USC, UCLA, and Pepperdine.

Cal Poly tallied an 8-4 singles record on the first day, with wins coming exclusively against top-40 programs. Highlights included true freshman Jovan Lubbe's statement victory against his UCLA opponent, while the Israeli duo of Sean Kamyshev and Raz Haviv each swept their matches against Pacific and Pepperdine.
Notable Day 1 Results:
- Lubbe defeated Reinhardt (UCLA) 6-4, 6-4 and Zuckerman (Pacific) 6-2, 6-2
- Kamyshev defeated Zuckerman (Pacific) 7-5, 6-2 and Fix (Pepperdine) 4-6, 7-6, 10-8
- Haviv defeated Rating (Pacific) 6-3, 6-2 and Photiades (Pepperdine) 2-6, 6-2, 10-6
- Hoeijmans defeated Das (Pacific) 6-2, 6-2
- Cross defeated Coffey (Pacific) 6-4, 6-4
- Seetso narrowly lost to Royas (USC) 6-3, 5-7, 10-6
On the second day, Cal Poly improved its singles record to 12-6 as Haviv, Kamyshev, and Lubbe all remained unbeaten at 3-0. Haviv's nail-biting victory was key in providing momentum.

- Haviv defeated Robledo Hoyos (USC) 7-6, 3-6, 10-7
- Kamyshev defeated Prachar (New Mexico) 7-6, 7-5
- Lubbe defeated Photiades (Pepperdine) 6-4, 6-0
- Hoeijmans defeated Chodur (BYU) 6-2, 6-3
The Mustangs closed the cup with another pair of victories, as Hoeijmans and Cross defeated their respective UC Santa Barbara opponents in a Blue-Green rivalry teaser.
Notable Day 3 Results:
- Hoeijmans defeated Avendano (UCSB) 4-6, 6-2, 10-6
- Cross defeated Brown (UCSB) 6-4, 6-1
“Overall, it was an encouraging weekend for both out newcomers and returners, and we're ready to build on it moving forward," Assistant Coach Jurgen De Jager said glowingly of his squad.
Cal Poly now heads to the Big West Masters Qualifier, hosted by UC Santa Barbara. The tournament features each team's four best players, and the winners from each gender will automatically qualify for the ITA Conference Masters Championships in November, which feeds into the fall NCAA Championships.
