COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three months after claiming his third collegiate title at the Ohio State Golf Club’s Scarlet Course, former Cal Poly men’s golf standout Baron Szeto fired a six-under 65 Wednesday that included a hole-in-one on the par three, 205-yard 17th hole to qualify for the 125th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Szeto, just the third four-time All-Big West selection in Cal Poly history and a 2025 NCAA Regional qualifier, shared co-medalist honors alongside Daniel Stringfellow.
“[Baron] keeps the streak alive,” said Cal Poly head coach Phil Rowe of Szeto, who followed previous Cal Poly U.S. Amateur qualifiers Jackson Parrish (2023-24) and Joey Zambri (2023, 2019). “It’s amazing that this is his first U.S. Amateur and just goes to show the level of the amateur game and really adds another notch to his list of accomplishments.”
After winning Ohio State’s April 18-19 Robert Kepler Intercollegiate with a three-round, five-under 208 (72-67-69), Szeto’s 65 during Wednesday’s qualifier comprised four birdies, zero bogeys and the eagled ace on the 17th hole with a five iron.
The 2025 U.S. Amateur is scheduled for Aug. 11-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco – less than 25 miles from Szeto’s native Moraga, Calif.
Aside from prevailing at Ohio State’s Robert Kepler Intercollegiate during his 2024-25 senior season, Szeto captured the title at Wake Forest’s Lyon's Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club (Sept. 18-20). Szeto led the Mustangs this past season with a 70.5 stroke average through 36 rounds while firing 20 rounds under par and a further 14 in the 60s.
Other recent U.S. Amateur qualifiers from the Cal Poly men’s golf program include Thomas Lehman (2018) and Justin De Los Santos (2016).
Congratulations to Baron Szeto (Moroga, CA) on his co-medalist finish at the 2025 U.S Amateur Final Qualifier at the Scarlet Course.
