EUGENE, Ore. — Vincent Atilano capped off a stellar freshman season on Friday at the USATF U20 Championships.
Competing in the men’s 400-meter hurdles final at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field, Atilano ran the seventh-fastest time in school history (51.64 seconds) to place fourth overall at the meet. It was a .24 second lifetime best for Atilano.
The Carlsbad, Calif. native had quite the first season as a Mustang. Atilano captured third in the 400 hurdles at the Big West Championships with his previous lifetime best of 51.88 seconds to earn All-Big West honors. He also ran the opening leg on Cal Poly’s 4x400-meter relay which shattered a 46-year-old school record in the event (3:06.72) at the Franson Last Chance Invite to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminaries for the first time in program history.
Atilano’s performance officially put an end to Cal Poly’s action on the track this spring. At least one Mustang is expected to compete in the 2025 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene on July 31-August 3. Aidan McCarthy has already met the automatic qualifying time in the men’s 800-meter.
