RENO – Cal Poly men’s golf senior Baron Szeto’s final collegiate round included three birdies and an eagle Wednesday afternoon as the four-time All-Big West selection closed NCAA Regional play at Montreux Golf & Country Club with a share of 27th place in the 70-player field.
The nation’s 101st-ranked player entering the postseason, Szeto balanced three birdies and an eagle on the 518-yard, par-five 13th hole against five bogeys for an even-par 72 and a three-round total of four-over 220 (70-78-72).
During a tournament marked by high winds, snow, frost and suspended play during both Monday’s opening round and Tuesday’s second round, Szeto – representing the Mustangs as Cal Poly’s first NCAA Regional individual participant in 10 years – finished six shots outside of the top 10.
To qualify for the May 23-28 NCAA Championship, Szeto would have had to finish as the player with the lowest score not from one of the five programs advancing to the NCAA Championship. That individual spot went to Duke’s Bryan Kim, who finished six under. BYU, Virginia, Texas, San Diego and California advanced the NCAA Championship.
During his standout senior season, Szeto set a new Cal Poly single-round record with a 63 to open California’s Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 7) while securing tournament titles at Wake Forest’s Lyon’s Links Invitational at Royal Dublin Golf Club (Sept. 18-20) and Ohio State’s Robert Kepler Invitational (April 18-19). He recorded a program-record 70.5 stroke average through 36 rounds while firing 20 rounds under par and a further 14 in the 60s.
