SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly distance team swept the season’s final Big West Men’s and Women’s Track Athlete of the Week awards on Tuesday.
Aidan McCarthy was crowned Big West Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season and the fifth time in his career, while freshman Melisse Djomby Enyawe earned Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
This marks the fourth straight week that at least two Cal Poly track and field athletes have garnered Big West Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Athlete of the Week praise, marking the first time in conference history that’s occurred.
The praise for McCarthy comes after he ran the fourth-fastest 800-meter time in the NCAA this outdoor season at the Franson Last Chance Invite on Friday hosted by Azusa Pacific University. Running his first outdoor 800 since the 2023 USATF Outdoor Championships, McCarthy put the rest of the country on notice, running an outdoor lifetime best of 1:45.53, the fastest time in the West Region this season and No. 4 in the NCAA in 2025. The Pleasanton, Calif. native crossed the finish line a full second and a half in front of his next closest competitor.
McCarthy's performance allowed him to break his own outdoor 800 school record by .73 seconds, and he was just .34 seconds off his all-conditions personal best of 1:45.19 — the fastest indoor 800 ran by an American in collegiate history. Earlier this year, McCarthy placed third in the 800 at the NCAA Indoor Championships to become the first Cal Poly men's track and field athlete to secure Division I First Team All-American honors in an event on the track indoors and just the third overall.
Djomby Enyawe received Big West Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors after running a lifetime best in the 1,500-meter of 4:27.41 at the Franson Last Chance Invite on Saturday. It was an over two-second PR for the Newport Beach native, and the time currently ranks seventh in the Big West this season. Djomby Enyawe finished 12th overall in the 1,500 at the meet and took fourth in her section.
Cal Poly will compete in the Big West Championships this Friday and Saturday at Long Beach State’s Jack Rose Track. Last year, the Mustangs became the first school in 14 years to sweep the men’s and women’s Big West titles.
