SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Cal Poly men's tennis team fought until the final point, but fell short to UC San Diego 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships on Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center.
The fifth-seeded Mustangs started the dual strong by capturing the doubles point over No. 4 seed UCSD. After a defeat at No. 1, John Cross and Sean Kamyshev teamed up for a 6-3 victory at No. 2 to improve to 6-2 together this season. Then at No. 3, Aaron Eliscu and Wian Roothman stepped up and rallied to secure a 7-5 win after trailing 4-5.
In singles, the Tritons (7-13) quickly knotted the match at 1-1 with a win in straight sets at No. 1. At No. 5, freshman Jack McGary lost a tightly-contested first-set tiebreaker 7-3 and then fell short in his match to allow UCSD to take a 2-1 advantage in their first Big West Championship appearance.
The four remaining singles matches all went to a third set. Cross won the second set in his battle at No. 4 to force a third, but ultimately dropped the match, giving the Tritons a 3-1 dual lead and putting them on the verge of clinching.
Eliscu kept the Mustangs in it with a clutch victory at No. 6, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to finish undefeated in singles and doubles on the day.
The two remaining matches at No. 2 and No. 3 were both nail bitters and the Mustangs needed to win both to claim the dual and advance to the Big West semifinals. Unfortunately, it wasn't Cal Poly's day as senior Bastiaan Weststrate dropped a thrilling third set at No. 2 7-5 to allow the Tritons to finish off a 4-2 dual win.
The defeat ended Cal Poly's season. The Mustangs (8-15) have a bright future ahead of them as only one player on this year's team is set to graduate — Weststrate.
