SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly wrestlers Koda Holeman and Trevor Tinker both received Division I Men's Scholar All-American honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) on Wednesday for their dedication and excellence in the classroom and on the mat this season.
The two Mustangs were among 335 exceptional student-athletes across 75 Division I schools that earned NWCA Scholar All-American praise.
Holeman is a junior in the classroom who is currently pursuing his business administration degree. During his redshirt sophomore season on the mat this year, Holeman finished with a 20-13 overall record at 125 pounds and secured an at-large bid to his first NCAA Championship where he went 0-2. He was the only Mustang that wrestled in every single date for the team this season, earning Ironman status.
Tinker, a fifth-year currently pursuing his bachelor’s in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration, earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors for the second straight year. On the mat this season, Tinker became the second wrestler in program history to win a Pac-12 Championship at heavyweight and the first since 1993. The title allowed the St. Louis, Missouri native to qualify for NCAAs for the third straight year, where he posted a 2-2 record to finish 24-7 on the year. At one point this season, Tinker had a 13-match winning streak and 22 of his 24 victories came via bonus points, including eight by technical fall and five by fall.
To qualify for NWCA Scholar All-American status, nominees had to meet one of the following criteria based on academic records and results obtained from TrackWrestling:
- Top 8 at NCAAs and a 3.0 GPA
- National qualifier and a 3.2 GPA
- Conference qualifier and a 3.5 GPA
