CORVALLIS, Ore. — Levi Bussey, Jagger French, Ceasar Garza and Andre Gonzales all earned victories, but Cal Poly wrestling came up short in a hard-fought dual at No. 25 Oregon State on Sunday inside Gill Coliseum.
Despite taking the mat without two of its five nationally ranked wrestlers, the Mustangs (3-3, 1-1 Pac-12) gave the Beavers (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) and their eight nationally ranked wrestlers everything they could handle. Cal Poly won four of the 10 matches all by decision, but it wasn’t enough as four bonus-point victories allowed OSU to pull away for a 24-12 win.
Oregon State opened the dual with back-to-back wins by decision. No. 18-ranked Koda Holeman fell 13-6 to No. 10 and 2025 Pac-12 champion Maximo Renteria at 125 pounds, and true freshman Leo Macias dropped a battle at 133 pounds to No. 32 Gabe Whisenhunt 5-0.
The Mustangs fell by major decision at 141 pounds to allow the Beavers to take a 10-0 lead before responding with a pair of decisions to tighten up the dual. First, Gonzales, ranked No. 32 in the country at 149 pounds, used a crucial third-period takedown to secure a 4-2 upset decision over No. 25 Noah Tolentino, improving to 15-7 on the year. Then, French, a redshirt freshman, scored two takedowns in the third period of his match at 157 pounds to grab an 8-3 decision and make it 10-6 in favor of OSU.
But after an intermission, the Beavers came out and earned a major decision at 165 and a technical fall at 174 to increase their lead to 19-6.
The best bout of the night occurred at 184 pounds between No. 24 Ceasar Garza and No. 31 TJ McDonnell, the defending Pac-12 champion at 184. An escape by each wrestler allowed the match to go into overtime tied at 1-1. After a scoreless first overtime period, the match went into tiebreakers with Garza earning a clutch takedown in the second tiebreaker to capture a 5-3 decision. It was Garza’s second victory of the season over the 2025 Pac-12 champion, and he improved to 14-2 this season and 6-0 in duals.
OSU added to its lead with a tech fall at 197 to clinch the win before Bussey ended the dual on a high note for the Mustangs. Making his first dual appearance as a Mustang, the true freshman secured a takedown with less than 15 seconds remaining in his heavyweight match to capture a 5-4 decision over Khale McDonnell after trailing 3-2 entering the third period.
Cal Poly heads to Stanford on Friday, Jan. 30, to face the Cardinal before hosting Morgan State on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. You can purchase tickets to Cal Poly’s final home dual HERE.
