STANFORD, Calif. — Cash Stewart secured a win by decision but Cal Poly wrestling fell at No. 16 Stanford 43-3 on Friday night inside Burnham Pavilion.
Facing off against six nationally-ranked wrestlers and taking the mat without several key members of their team, the Mustangs (3-4) knew they were in for a challenge against the Cardinal (5-6) before the dual even began.
After dropping the first nine matches of the dual that started at 184 pounds, Stewart helped the Mustangs end the night on a high note. Trailing 1-0 entering the third period of his match at 174 pounds, Stewart earned a clutch reversal and takedown to capture a 6-2 decision over Stanford’s Collin Guffey. Stewart improved to 13-12 on the season.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Clink made his dual debut on Friday, dropping a major decision at 184 pounds.
Koda Holeman, ranked 18th in the country at 125 pounds, held his own in a tough battle with two-time NCAA qualifier and No. 12-ranked Nico Provo, falling by an 11-7 decision.
Cal Poly returns to the friendly confines of Mott Athletics Center at 1 p.m. on Sunday to host Morgan State in its final home dual of the season. Prior to the dual, the Mustangs will honor their eight graduating seniors — Devin Alexander, Ty Chandler, Ceasar Garza, Andre Gonzales, Koda Holeman, Luke Meyer, Cash Stewart and Luka Wick. You can purchase tickets to the dual HERE and the dual will also be streamed live on FloWrestling and the team’s X/Twitter account.
