
Cal Poly Earns Emphatic Victory over Morgan State in Final Home Dual

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by seven bonus-point victories and three technical falls, the Cal Poly wrestling team rolled to a 37-15 win over Morgan State on Sunday in its final home dual of the season.
In its first matchup with Morgan State in 32 years and just the second meeting all-time between the programs, Cal Poly dominated from start to finish inside Mott Athletics Center to improve to 4-4 in duals this year. The Mustangs racked up a whopping 26 total takedowns across the dual.
Koda Holeman, ranked 17th in the country, set the tone early for the Mustangs with a 20-5 technical fall victory at 125 pounds, improving to 16-5 overall on the season and 6-2 in duals. He secured six takedowns in the match to give the Clovis, Calif. native a team-high 27 takedowns in duals this season.
Anthony Lucio stepped on the match next and increased Cal Poly’s lead to 9-0 with a 12-2 major decision at 133 pounds.
The Bears (0-13) earned their only lead of the night after a forfeit by the Mustangs at 141 pounds and a pin at 149 pounds, taking a 12-9 advantage.
Cal Poly responded with back-to-back technical falls to silence Morgan State. First, Jagger French earned five takedowns and a 4-point near fall en route to a 21-3 win (5:57) at 157 pounds, improving to 10-5 on the year. Then Anthony Berg picked up a 21-3 technical fall win of his own at 165 pounds, finishing his opponent at 5:51 thanks to six takedowns. It was Berg’s first career match wrestling at 165 pounds, and he improved to 15-7 overall this season.
Morgan State earned a win by decision at 174 pounds to draw closer, but Cal Poly pulled away for good with three straight bonus-point wins to end the dual. Ceasar Garza (184) and Wesley Wilson (heavyweight) accepted forfeits at their respective weight classes, and Cole Jackson sealed the emphatic win for the Mustangs by pinning his opponent 1 minute and 47 seconds into his match at 197 pounds.
Cal Poly heads to Little Rock on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m. to take on the Trojans (3-9) in its last dual of the season. The Mustangs return to Mott Athletics Center on Friday, March 6, to host the Pac-12 Championships for the first time in 21 years.
