SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program returns to action this week to take part in some of the country’s most competitive regular season meets — the prestigious Bryan Clay Invitational and the 65th annual Mt. SAC Relays.
The Mustangs are sending athletes to four separate meets this week in Southern California — the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University on Wednesday through Friday, the Mt. SAC Relays hosted by Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday through Saturday, the Leopard Invitational hosted by La Verne University on Thursday and Friday and the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State on Friday and Saturday.
Cal Poly’s top distance runners are slated to compete in the Bryan Clay Invitational — coined as the “fastest track meet in the country” — while the Mustangs’ best sprinters, jumpers, hurdles, throwers and pole vaulters will take part in the Mt. SAC Relays. A few distance runners will race in the Leopard Invitational while a handful of sprinters, jumpers and throwers will travel to Long Beach.
Live streams are available for the Bryan Clay Invitational, Mt. SAC Relays and Leopard Invitational with the purchase of subscriptions and the links to watch can be found on the Cal Poly track and field schedule page. Live results links for all four meets this week can also be found there.
Some of the notable entries for the Mustangs at the Bryan Clay Invitational include Aidan McCarthy (men’s 1,500), Tatiana Cornejo (women’s 800, 1,500) and Bryce Kueker (men’s 3,000 steeplechase). McCarthy is set to make his outdoor season debut Friday night in the elite division of the men’s 1,500 after placing third in the 800 at the NCAA Indoor Championships a month ago to become Cal Poly’s first men’s track and field athlete to secure Division I First Team All-American honors in an event on the track indoors and just the third overall.
Over 20 Mustangs will compete in the Mt. SAC Relays, including Lexi Evans (women’s pole vault), Chase Walter (men’s 400), Corban Payne (men’s shot put), Rory Devaney (men’s hammer throw, discus), Travis Martin (men’s hammer throw) and Colby Neron (men’s javelin), who all earned spots in the elite sections in their respective events.
Cal Poly currently boasts five top-25 nationally ranked event squads — No. 6 women’s high jump, No. 10 men’s hammer throw, No. 12 men’s 1,500, No. 15 women’s 5,000 and No. 25 men’s 5,000.
Ten Mustangs currently own top-50 marks in the nation this outdoor season — Travis Martin is No. 9 in the men’s hammer throw, Lexi Evans No. 10 in the women’s pole vault, Rory Devaney No. 14 in the men’s hammer throw, Tatiana Cornejo No. 19 in the women’s 5,000, Bryce Kueker No. 19 in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase, Colby Neron No. 19 in the men’s javelin, Chase Walter No. 26 in the men’s 400, Michael Chambers No. 28 in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase, Corban Payne No. 42 in the men’s shot put and Chris Caudillo No. 45 in the men’s 1,500.
Following this week’s slew of meets, Cal Poly heads to the UCSB Invite on Saturday, April 26, at Pauley Track.
