No. 38 Cal Poly Suffers First Loss in Nearly a Month at LBSU
3/8/2025 9:00:00 PM | Women's Tennis
LONG BEACH, Calif. — The 38th-ranked Cal Poly women's tennis team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end Saturday, falling 5-2 at Long Beach State.
In doubles play, Cal Poly's No. 2 tandem of senior Peyton Dunkle and redshirt sophomore Amy Leather continued their stellar play, winning 6-1 to pick up their third straight victory and improve to 6-1 on the season. Unfortunately though, the Mustangs dropped the doubles point with defeats at No. 1 and No. 3.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, Cal Poly needed to win four of the six matches to secure a comeback victory over a talented Long Beach State side. Freshman Jessica MacCallum lost her first singles match since Jan. 20 — ending a nine-match winning streak — at the No. 5 spot, allowing the Beach to take a 2-0 lead.
Junior Kennedy Buntrock made it 2-1 with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1, improving her record to 6-3 on the year. LBSU responded with a win at No. 2 to regain a two-point advantage before senior Romane Mosse stepped up and delivered a 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 to keep hopes of a comeback alive by making it 3-2. For Mosse, it was her third straight victory and allowed her to move to 8-3 on the season.
However, the Beach closed it out with a straight-sets win at No. 6 and then junior Alexandra Ozerets dropped a tight battle at No. 4, 3-6, 6-2, 2-6, ending her three-match winning streak.
It was Cal Poly's first Big West loss of the season and first overall since Feb. 9 at home against Fresno State. LBSU upped its winning streak to seven with the win and improved to 8-2 and 2-1 in Big West play.
Cal Poly (9-3, 2-1 Big West) returns home at noon Monday to host a nonconference match against Loyola Marymount at the Ronca Tennis Center.
