SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – After kicking off the 2025 season at the Battle for LA over the weekend, the sixth ranked Cal Poly Beach Volleyball team secured wins against No. 8 Long Beach State and Concordia University Irvine, while falling short against No. 1-ranked UCLA and No. 2-ranked LMU.
These victories over the weekend earned players Izzy Martinez and Logan Walter the Big West Pair of the Week honors. Playing at the No. 2 spot in the lineup, Martinez and Walter shined in their first matches as a pair. They started the season by taking down No. 1 UCLA’s No. 2 pair, followed by No. 8 Long Beach State’s No. 2 pair. The next day, they defeated the No. 2 pair from Concordia before falling to No. 2 LMU’s duo. This marks the second time both Martinez and Walter have won Big West Pair of the Week, having each done so once last season with different partners.
The Mustangs now look forward to hitting the road for the Sun Devil Classic this week hosted by Arizona State. Cal Poly will play in two doubleheaders, first facing the University of Arizona on Friday, March 7, at 9 a.m., followed by Texas A&M at 11 a.m. They will then square off against Coastal Carolina on Saturday, March 8 at 10:30 a.m. and No. 10 Arizona State at 12:30 p.m.
Cal Poly defeated Arizona State last year in the First Round of the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship. The Mustangs look to carry that momentum into this weekend’s tournament.
Following this weekend, the Mustangs will have their first home event of the season, the Mustang Roundup March 15 & 16 at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex where they will take on San Jose State, Grand Canyon, UC Davis, and Houston Christian.
