Mustangs Fall to No. 6 Oregon State in Game One Defensive Duel
3/22/2025 12:00:00 AM | Baseball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Chris Downs stalled the Beaver offense (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER) and Alejandro Garza led Cal Poly's hitting (3-for-5, 1 RBI), but Cal Poly could not find the runs for a comeback as the Mustangs fell 4-1 to no. 6 Oregon State on Friday night.
Cal Poly (13-7, 6-0 BWC) lost just its second home game of the season Friday night after a hard-fought defensive battle against one of the best pitching staffs in the country, Oregon State (17-3). The Beavers racked up 15 strikeouts and held Mustang batters to seven hits with no inning yielding more than a pair of hits.
Jack Collins, though held hitless in an 0-for-3 outing, tallied his 19th game this season getting on base with the sole outlier being last Sunday. Alejandro Garza (3-for-5) and Braxton Thomas (2-for-4) were the only Mustangs to gather multiple hits, and Garza's first of the game gave Cal Poly its run.
The Friday night crowd of 2,128 was Baggett Stadium's largest attendance of the season and since last year's finale against Long Beach State (2,792).
The action kicked off quickly as the Mustangs and Beavers traded one run apiece in the first inning. MLB.com's no. 7 draft prospect Aiva Arquette sent a one-run shot over the left field wall in the top and Alejandra Garza responded with a single through the right side to score Dante Vachini from second in the bottom.
Oregon State found a stretch of consistent runs through the next three consecutive innings, taking a lasting, go-ahead 4-1 lead. Despite some challenges with OSU's high-powered offense, Griffin Naess and the fielding defense got Cal Poly out of some jams, stranding seven Beavers by the time the sophomore starter was relieved heading into the top of five.
Chris Downs came in and finally provided some scoreless baseball for Cal Poly, never needing more than five batters to retire the side, which included three-up, three-down innings in the fifth and seventh. Downs went the distance for the Mustangs with five complete innings pitched and four hits allowed as the 6-foot-7 southpaw has astoundingly not allowed a run in his last three appearances and 10 2/3 innings.
Cal Poly mustered an offensive response in the bottom of six, as Braxton Thomas notched his second hit of the day with a single to shallow right-center before Daudet's double down the right field line and into the corner that put himself and Thomas in scoring position. Dante Vachini's third walk of the game and team-leading 14th of the season loaded the bases, but Oregon State reliever Eric Segura struck out Ryan Fenn to strand all three Mustangs.
The Mustangs still had some life in the bottom of nine to make one final attempt at a comeback. Alejandro Garza singled with two outs to start a possible rally. Jack Collins crushed what would've been a long bomb over left field but a pitch clock violation voided the home run. Collins still got on base via OSU's balk, but it was not enough as the Beavers tallied one more strikeout to seal the 4-1 result.
Cal Poly welcomes Oregon State back to Baggett Stadium tomorrow for game two of three in the non-conference series, with 3 pm set as the start time.
