Marmie Leads Shutout in Series-Sweeping Finale Over Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Off to its best start in 29 Big West Conference seasons, Cal Poly completed a sweep of its baseball series against Long Beach State on Sunday, belting four home runs in a 9-0 victory at Blair Field.
Sophomore right-hander Ethan Marmie (3-1) and two relievers earned the Mustangs' first shutout of the season, striking out six over seven innings with one walk and five hits allowed. Reece Bueno and Troy Cooper each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
Stretching its winning streak to eight games and earning its 12th win in its last 13 contests, Cal Poly improved to 6-0 in Big West games and 13-6 for the season. Long Beach State has lost six straight, falling to 6-13 and 1-5.
Cal Poly, which also swept the Dirtbags in 2019 at Blair Field and in 2018 at Baggett Stadium, has won 15 of 22 contests against Long Beach State over the last seven seasons.
The first-place Mustangs are a game ahead of UC Irvine (5-1), which swept CSUN over the weekend, 1.5 games in front of UC Davis (3-0), which swept UC Riverside, and UC Santa Barbara (4-2), which lost two of three games at Hawai'i.
Sunday's game ended on an odd note. Trying to avoid being shut out, the Dirtbags had runners at first and second with two outs in the bottom of the ninth when Reid Montgomery trotted to first base on what he thought was ball four. Matt Toomey, the runner at first base, advanced to second.
Problem was the count to Montgomery was 3-1. Cal Poly catcher Jack Collins alertly threw the ball to his shortstop, Nate Castellon, who tagged Toomey well short of second base. After the umpires held discussions with Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee, Long Beach State mentor TJ Bruce and official scorekeeper Matt Turk, Toomey was called out and the game was over.
For the 10th time in its last 12 games, Cal Poly produced double-digit hits. The Mustangs outscored the Dirtbags 21-2 in the series and lifted their team batting average over the last 13 games to .336 and in six Big West contests to .335.
"One of the signs of a good offensive team is when you have double digit hits in almost every game and have three or four players with multiple hits," said Lee. "That's usually a good sign."
Designated hitter Braxton Thomas, Castellon and right fielder Dylan Kordic each had two of Cal Poly's 12 hits Sunday.
Thomas belted a solo home run and run-scoring double, Castellon contributed an RBI double and a single and Kordic singled and doubled to lead the Mustangs at the plate.
First baseman Zach Daudet belted a two-run home run in the third inning while left fielder Dante Vachini and center fielder Casey Murray Jr. added solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, for Cal Poly.
While the Mustangs produced eight extra-base hits -- four doubles and a quartet of home runs -- each of Long Beach State's seven hits were singles, including two by shortstop Armando Briseno.
Blair Field has usually been a difficult place for Cal Poly. The Mustangs were 7-29 at the historic facility from 1998 through 2017 and did not win a series on the road against the Dirtbags from 1998 through 2008.
"Like it has been since the very beginning here, you have to play for one run an inning for whatever reason," Lee said. "We were able to score multiple runs in innings this weekend. You have to have players who can execute a variety of skills."
Marmie, helped by three infield double plays, retired the side in order twice, striking out the side in the sixth frame. He has gone seven or more innings in each of his last four starts.
"Another strong outing," Lee said of Marmie. "He got a little tired and hopefully we can get even more innings out of him as the season progresses. That becomes more important on Sundays because you usually already have used a number of arms out of the pen. He allows us to shorten the game and makes it less taxing on our arms in the bullpen."
Cal Poly steps away from Big West play next weekend, hosting Oregon State for three non-conference games Friday through Sunday inside Baggett Stadium.
