SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly beach volleyball kicked off its 2025 home slate and the opening day of the Mustang Roundup with a pair of victories Saturday at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex.
The Mustangs’ No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 pairings all went 2-0 on the day to help Cal Poly secure a 5-0 victory over San Jose State and a 3-2 win over No. 14 Grand Canyon. The Mustangs improved to 8-2 on the season with the victories and have now won their last six matches.
The No. 6-ranked Mustangs opened the day by throttling the Spartans. Piper Ferch and Erin Inskeep, the reigning Big West Pair of the Week, got the first point on the board for Cal Poly with an emphatic 21-9, 21-17 at No. 1.
Logan Walter and Izzy Martinez at No. 2, and Abbey Reinard and Elise Lenahan at No. 5 rolled to straight-set wins to give the Mustangs a 3-0 advantage. After dropping the first set in their matches, Ella Connor and Lindsey Sparks at No. 3, and Quinn Perry and Madi Nichols at No. 4 rallied for comeback three-set victories to complete the sweep for the Mustangs, their fourth of the season.
Cal Poly capped the night with a showdown against No. 14 GCU (9-5). Once again, Ferch and Inskeep were the first pair to finish, grabbing a 21-12, 22-20 win at No. 1 to improve to 8-2 on the season and up their winning streak to eight.
The Antelopes leveled the match at 1-1 with a straight-set win at No. 5 before Perry and Nichols finished off an undefeated day with a 21-11, 21-15 win at No. 4 to put the Mustangs back in front 2-1.
The two remaining matches — courts No. 2 and No. 3 — both went to a third set. Cal Poly only needed to win on one court to secure the dual victory, and Walter and Martinez came through in the clutch to clinch it, winning 21-13, 15-21, 15-12 at No. 2. The duo improved to 9-1 on the year and upped their winning streak to six.
The win against No. 14 GCU marked Cal Poly’s third over a ranked opponent this season.
Cal Poly wraps up the Mustang Roundup on Sunday, taking on UC Davis at 2 p.m. and Houston Christian University at 4:30 p.m.
