Mustangs Come Up Short in Final Minute at CSUN
2/15/2025 7:44:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE – Graduate Owen Koonce recorded his second double-double of the season against CSUN with 21 points and 10 boards and fellow guard Isaac Jessup added 18 points, but the Cal Poly men's basketball program – despite 14 three-pointers – fell to the Matadors Saturday evening, 89-85.
Guards Jarred Hyder (above) and Cayden Ward each added 11 points for Cal Poly (10-16, 4-10), which utilized a tip-in from graduate guard Mac Riniker with 12 seconds remaining to cut its deficit to 85-83. An errant pass from Matadors forward Keonte Jones on the ensuing inbounds was picked off by Koonce, but Cal Poly's leading scorer missed a potential game-tying jumper inside the key with three seconds to play.
With Cal Poly forced to foul, CSUN forward Marcus Adams, Jr., converted both ends of the one-and-one for the final scoreline.
During a matchup that featured 15 lead changes and with neither side leading by more than six points during the final 25 minutes, Cal Poly shot 55.2 (16-for-29) percent from the floor during the first half before being held to a 36.1 (13-for-36) percent clip in the second.
Cal Poly plays four of its final six regular season matchups at home with the Mustangs returning to Mott Athletics Center to first host Big West leader UC San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 20. Tip time on ESPN+ is 7 p.m.
During Saturday's matchup, Cal Poly faced a 39-33 deficit five-and-a-half minutes before the break before freshman guard Peter Bandelj sank two free throws and Hyder followed with a layup and his third three-pointer of the opening half to place the Mustangs in front.
The two sides traded the lead four more times down the stretch before a Jessup three-pointer helped increase Cal Poly's lead to 50-46 at the break. The Mustangs shot 52.9 (9-for-17) percent from three-point range in the opening period.
CSUN opened the second half with a 9-3 run to go back in front, but neither side led by more than four points until a three-pointer from Matadors guard Scotty Washington placed his side in front, 77-72, with seven-and-a-half minutes to play.
Freshman guard Vasilic, however, knocked down Cal Poly's 13th three-pointer during the next possession to help keep the Mustangs within distance down the stretch.
