Cal Poly Baseball Edged Out by UCLA on Opening Day
2/14/2025 8:30:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES — The Mustangs and Bruins labored through a bullpen duel to a low-scoring affair that featured four hits apiece and 15 runners left on between the opponents as UCLA scraped a 3-2 win.
Cal Poly and UCLA traded relatively uneventful half-innings through the first two frames aside from a Bruin double in the second inning that ended up stranded thanks to Griffin Naess' clutch ability.
After a UCLA error to put freshman shortstop Nate Castellon on, the Mustangs found a way through during the third inning as Jack Collins notched both his first hit in the Green and Gold as well as Cal Poly's first of the new season.
Back-to-back runs scored for Cal Poly, first from Zach Daudet's sac bunt to score Castellon before Ryan Fenn picked up extra bases to bring Collins around. Fenn's double extended his hit streak to 12 games dating back to the end of last season.
Through the third inning, Naess allowed five free passes (4 BB, 1 HBP) while eclipsing 70 pitches through three innings.
The combination of Naess having a tough time finding the zone and UCLA batters not biting on his low, drooping curveball allowed the Bruins back into the game at a 2-2 tie from a bases-loaded walk and hit batter in consecutive pitches.
Reece Bueno entered in the 5th inning and blanked UCLA for two consecutive innings of relief, allowing just one hit on 30 pitches before giving way to Jake Torres for the 7th.
To that point, the Mustang offense was still hanging on a triplet of hits, relying on solid bullpen pitching to keep the game alive while the Cal Poly bats looked to settle back in.
UCLA walked twice against Cal Poly's Torres in the 7th before singling to left field and bringing in the go-ahead run for a 3-2 Bruin lead. The lefty reliever collected a pair of strikeouts in the inning to help limit the damage.
Cal Poly stymied an insurance attempt by UCLA to bunt and run in the 8th inning as the batter popped up to Torres who tossed over to Daudet at first for a double play.
Collins wrapped up his first career game as the Mustangs' catcher with a 2-for-4 performance after nabbing one final consolation hit in the 9th before UCLA could shut the game down.
The Mustangs and Bruins will play game two tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at Jackie Robinson Stadium, and Cal Poly will look for its first win of the young 2025 season.
