Mustangs Notch First Home Run of 2025 in Loss to UCLA
2/15/2025 9:30:00 PM | Baseball
Second-year designated hitter Braxton Thomas did not waste much time getting the Mustangs started in the first inning, grounding into a fielder's choice but making good enough contact for Fenn to speed home.
Left-hander Josh Volmerding experienced a tough first outing, starting on the mound while allowing contact in play to the first five batters and giving up four runs in the bottom of the first. One more run in the second inning to put UCLA up 5-1 was enough for head coach Larry Lee to insert Caden Pearlman.
Unfortunately, the Bruins found fast success against Pearlman as well, nabbing another two runs before Charlie Royle took over for the final two outs. In the first at-bat of the third inning, Zach Daudet responded with Cal Poly's first home run to scratch at the lead with the Mustangs still down 8-2.
Royle held the line for 2 ? innings, allowing just two total hits before the Bruins managed to put more runs on the board after the junior righty was relieved by Troy Cooper, Chris Downs, and Luke Kalfsbeek in the following two innings.
Josh Morano, a sophomore transfer from Arizona, had a successful first relief appearance as the only Mustang to allow no runs in the 18-2 loss. Newcomer catcher Jack Collins continued his productive start to the season 3-for-6, while Daudet's home run helped the first baseman to a 2-for-3 afternoon and 1.250 slugging through two games.
Cal Poly wraps up the first road series tomorrow looking to not only find its first win of the year but also stop UCLA from achieving a sweep, all before staying in Los Angeles for LMU on Monday.
