Mustangs on to LMU After Sweep in Opening Series at UCLA
2/16/2025 6:30:00 PM | Baseball
LOS ANGELES — The Mustangs struggled to find offensive and defensive consistency against a strong power-4 side in UCLA during the third game of 2025's opening series, losing the Sunday matinee 16-0.
This was the shutout Cal Poly has suffered since April 12, 2024 as the Mustangs have generally been able to rely on their bats over the last calendar year. However, they are still trying to find their stride entering a new campaign with four of their top hitters having graduated or drafted last season.
The weekend's clear standout was newcomer Jack Collins, a transfer from conference rival Long Beach State, who replaced reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year and Baltimore Orioles prospect Ryan Stafford at catcher. Collins was a bright spot in an otherwise tough weekend, clocking at least one hit in all three games and batting .444 (4-for-9) while perfect (1.000%) from a fielding perspective.
Starting pitcher Ethan Marmie went four complete innings, giving up seven earned runs, before being relieved by Tanner Sagouspe. He, Chris Downs, and Caden Pearlman did their job in holding the Bruins runless, but a tough sixth inning shared between Cam Hoiland and Josh Morano gave UCLA some running room as they game got out of hand. Casey Murray Jr. was the only other batter to notch a hit for the Mustangs, and Dante Vachini drew a pair of walks to lead Cal Poly with four after the series.
Cal Poly stays in the Los Angeles area looking to settle into a better groove against a LMU squad coming off a successful series sweep.
