Mustangs Find Stride in Midweek Road Win Over LMU

LOS ANGELES — Nine Mustangs picked up hits in a get-right game for Cal Poly, while Jack Collins, Braxton Thomas, and Alejandro Garza notched multiple RBIs during a 9-1 midweek road victory over LMU on Monday night.
Collins extended his hit streak to four games in his debut season at Cal Poly, taking his average to .429 with six hits and just one strikeout.
Along with the newcomer behind the plate, true freshman fielders Nate Castellon and Dante Vachini each logged their first career collegiate hit and first-year hurlers Troy Cooper and Luke Kalfsbeek enjoyed their first outing with zero runs allowed.
Josh Volmerding was given the start after a rocky Saturday outing at UCLA, and the sophomore southpaw answered the call by providing three solid innings of runless baseball, holding the LMU batters to just one hit.
Reece Bueno, building on his fantastic season debut over the weekend, notched the win during a two-inning middle relief appearance.
Nate Castellon flashed his defensive ability in short early, nearly making a highlight real play fielding a ground ball from the shallow left field gap. Going along with that defensive spark in the first, Josh Volmerding combined with Zach Daudet to pick off LMU's first baserunner of the game.
Cal Poly finally found its first hits with Collins and Thomas in the fourth, setting up a scoring opportunity on the corners that were eventually left stranded.
Reece Bueno came in for Volmerding in the 4th inning, allowing a single, two walks and a hit-by-pitch to juice the bases and bring LMU's first run in. Even so, Bueno stood tall and got the Mustangs out of a jam with two strikeouts in the final three batters.
Ryan Fenn finally opened up what would eventually become a large rally with his double to left-center in the fifth. Alejandro Garza chopped between short and second to round the speedy Fenn, which then kicked off a five-batter stretch of scoring.
Casey Murray Jr. singled to left, which sent him to third and scored Garza after the outfielder had trouble corralling the deep ball before Jack Collins sent Murray Jr. home on a hard-hit bouncer that caused the LMU shortstop to commit an error.
Dylan Kordic and Braxton Thomas followed that up with RBIs of their own to give Cal Poly breathing room and a commanding 5-1 lead.
Fenn was looking more and more like his 2024 self with his second hit of the game that put runners on the corners again in the 6th. Garza, the next batter up, quickly shot another grounder through the opposite gap to score Castellon and put Fenn at third.
A few pitches into the next at-bat, Garza baited the LMU catcher into throwing him down at second in a potential steal situation, which was not only successful for the sophomore, but also allowed Fenn to steal home.
With Cal Poly already leading 7-1, Collins continued the fantastic start to his debut season at Cal Poly with his own RBI up the middle for an 8-1 Cal Poly lead before LMU could finally shut the inning down.
To start the 8th, Garza tacked on a third hit in four consecutive at-bats of getting on-base. Shortly after, a fielding error on Braxton Thomas' grounder allowed Garza to come home for the 9-1 Cal Poly lead.
Jake Torres and Tanner Sagouspe combined to allow just one hit in the final two innings to hold the line and give Cal Poly its first win of the 2025 season.
