SAN LUIS OBISPO — Though not the program’s longest win streak at Mott Athletics Center, Cal Poly's run of 16 consecutive home victories over more than a calendar year ranks among the best in the entire country. The Mustangs will aim to defend that streak once again this weekend.
Last weekend, the Mustangs (19-5, 10-2 Big West) extended their conference-best win streak to eight straight matches and, for the second consecutive year, completed a season series sweep of both Cal State Bakersfield and CSUN last weekend.
Cal Poly was dominant in a sweep of the Roadrunners, hitting .427 and recording at least 17 kills in every set. The team then showcased its resilience on Saturday, outlasting a determined CSUN squad in a five-set battle. Against the Matadors, five Mustangs recorded double-digit kills and the team combined to smash this season’s single-match digs mark with 81.
Emme Bullis led the team overall last weekend, averaging 11.14 assists and 4.13 digs per set. Emma Fredrick headed the offense with 17 kills in the sweep of the Roadrunners, while Charlotte Kelly finished with 15 kills on .448 hitting and six total blocks against CSUN.
The Mustangs still lead the Big West in hitting percentage (.280) by at least thirty points and have solidified their defense to rank third in the conference for opponent hitting percentage (.185).
Two Mustangs are set to surpass major career milestones in the next few matches.
Bullis needs just 70 assists to reach 4,000 for her career, which would make her just the fourth Mustang in program history to hit that mark. Already fourth on the program's all-time list, Bullis needs just over 200 more assists to challenge for second and third.
Chloe Leluge can also make history with the program’s best career hitting percentage. The sophomore middle blocker and Big West Preseason Coaches’ Team honoree needs three attempts to reach the minimum (800) to qualify for the career hitting percentage ranking. She already leads the category by 11 points (.366) heading into the weekend.
The Mustangs are also facing clinching scenarios for a Big West postseason berth, even with six matches remaining. On Friday, the Mustangs clinch if they win and either UCI or Hawai'i loses. However, a pair of wins this weekend would secure Cal Poly's spot regardless of any other results.
The Beach and Tritons are the only two programs to defeat the Mustangs this season, and thus currently hold tiebreaker advantages, giving the home squad extra motivation.
The Beach (17-6, 10-2 Big West) are currently tied with Cal Poly in the standings and on a three-match win streak. Long Beach State leads the Big West in kills per set by a wide margin and ranks in the top five of most major statistical categories. Individually, Logan King is third in kills, Madi Maxwell is second in assists, and Nieko Thomas is third in blocks.
Though struggling in-conference, UC San Diego (5-19, 3-9 Big West) defeated the Mustangs in La Jolla last time out. Molly McCluskey, one of the conference’s premier pin hitters, led the way with 16 kills in that match and remains top-three in the Big West for kills. The Mustangs will be fighting for their first win over UCSD since 2023.
