Haury’s 46 Assists Power Cal Poly Through GCU in Season-Opening Sweep

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Playing with a chip on their shoulder and their eyes set on another deep postseason run, the Mustangs opened their season with a statement sweep over Grand Canyon, powered by transfer setter Alexis Haury’s 46 assists.
Haury, who recorded over 1,000 assists last season at Washington, orchestrated a relentless Cal Poly attack that hit .274 as a team. She finished with 46 assists and just one error, adding three service aces in the process.
Kendall Beshear showcased her two-way game once again, leading all players with a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs, while also contributing a block assist and three aces.
Emma Fredrick added 12 kills and six digs, and Kayla Murdoch was nearly unstoppable in a breakout performance, logging 11 kills on just 17 swings with only four errors; a scorching .412 hitting percentage.
The only Mustang more efficient was Breklyn Pulling, who made her return from injury after more than 12 months and chipped in seven kills on 12 swings at a .417 clip. Her middle-blocking partner, Charlotte Kelly, starting in place of the injured Chloe Leluge, contributed five kills and three block assists.
Defensively, Elif Hurriyet co-led the team with 10 digs and anchored a Mustang back line that held GCU to a paltry .179 hitting percentage, with only four Lopes hitting above .200 and three committing multiple errors.
Though the set scores were deceptively close (25-22, 25-21, 25-22) Cal Poly simply outhit the Lopes, doubling their kill totals in both the first and third sets.
Cal Poly (1-0) secured a crucial season-opening win and now carries momentum into a marquee matchup tomorrow at 5 p.m. PT against reigning national champions Texas A&M, airing on ESPN+ and SECN+.
