SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly Mustangs (25-7, 14-4 Big West) are headed to their 18th NCAA Tournament, entering the Los Angeles Regional. The field includes host and No. 4 seed USC, No. 13 Princeton (the Trojans' opponent), No. 12 Cal Poly, and the Mustangs' foe, No. 5 BYU.
Fans, coaches, and players alike gathered at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex to watch the NCAA Selection Show with the team as they learned their next destination on the journey to Kansas City, the host of this year's NCAA Championship. The Mustangs were selected for the Los Angeles Regional in the fourth and final quadrant announced.
The two-day, single-elimination contest will take place at USC's Galen Center from December 4-5. Cal Poly officially clinched its 18th NCAA Tournament berth by winning the Big West Championship crown just yesterday and will now face BYU, an at-large selection and top-25-ranked opponent from the Big 12.
The Mustangs last made an NCAA appearance in 2019 and hold a 15-17 all-time record in their 17 previous tournaments. Cal Poly's last NCAA Tournament win was also that season, when the Mustangs defeated Georgia in five sets before being eliminated by Stanford.
Cal Poly holds a 6-11 series record against BYU. The teams last played in 2016, a 3-0 loss for the Mustangs when BYU was ranked No. 16 nationally. Cal Poly's last victory over BYU was a 3-2 win in 2010 under coach Jon Stevenson.
