Mustangs Fall to No. 8 Stanford in Four-Set Fight to Close SLO Classic

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Four Mustangs recorded double-digit kills, but Cal Poly fell to No. 8 Stanford (22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 20-25) on Sunday afternoon inside Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs opened the match with a back-and-forth first set, but Stanford closed on a 6-2 run to take it 25-22. The second set saw the Cardinal again pull away late for a 25-22 win.
Cal Poly responded in the third set, using a multi-point run midway through the frame to build an 18-11 advantage before holding off Stanford for a 25-21 victory.
The fourth set was the most tightly contested, featuring nine ties, but Stanford broke a 13-13 deadlock with a 5-0 run and never looked back, clinching the match 25-20.
Cal Poly finished the match with 64 kills and a .368 hitting percentage, while Stanford recorded 60 kills on a .414 clip. The difference was the Cardinal's 12 block assists and nine service aces, capitalizing on Mustang mistakes.
Despite the result, Cal Poly received strong offensive performances from several players. Emma Fredrick led the Mustangs with 14 kills on 29 attempts, hitting .345, while adding five digs and one service ace. Kendall Beshear matched Fredrick with 14 kills on 24 swings, hitting .542, and contributed seven digs and two aces.
Charlotte Kelly was nearly flawless, recording 12 kills on 19 attempts with no errors for a .632 hitting percentage, while adding one block. Chloe Leluge and Kayla Murdoch recorded eight and 10 kills, respectively, with Leluge hitting .400. Aveya Stone contributed six kills and one block.
Alexis Haury racked up 35 assists, adding eight digs and one service ace. Samantha Callahan chipped in 18 assists and nine digs, while Elif Hurriyet added eight assists and 10 digs.
The Mustangs will look to snap their three-match skid as Big West play begins next weekend when Cal Poly hosts Cal State Bakersfield (Sept. 25, 6 p.m.) and CSUN (Sept. 26, 4 p.m.).
