Mustangs Cruise Past Roadrunners in Big West Opening Sweep

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly volleyball team opened Big West play with a straight-sets sweep (25-21, 25-21, 25-11) over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday evening inside Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs improved to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in conference action, while the Roadrunners fell to 5-8 and 0-1 in the Big West. This victory also extends Cal Poly’s conference win streak at home to 15 matches, dating back to October 2024.
Cal Poly controlled the match from the opening serve, never trailing or tying at any point through the three-set sweep. The Mustangs finished the night with a .255 team hitting percentage, recording 41 kills against 16 errors on 98 total attacks. The `Runners were held to a .079 clip with 24 kills and 17 errors on 89 swings.
The Mustangs sped to a 7-0 lead in the opening frame behind the serving of Alexis Haury. Cal Poly never relinquished that advantage, though the Roadrunners clawed back to within three at 24-21 before a Kendall Beshear kill closed out the set.
The second set followed a similar script, with the Mustangs building an early cushion and holding off a late CSUB push to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Opening the decisive frame with a 9-2 run, the third set was all Cal Poly. The Mustangs broke away behind strong serving and relentless attacking, closing the match on a 14-4 run.
Four Mustangs recorded at least six kills, led by Emma Fredrick's 11 and Kayla Murdoch's 10. Cal Poly hit .368 in the second set and .364 in the third, committing just three and four errors in those frames.
Defensively, the Mustangs limited CSUB to a negative hitting percentage in the first (-.069) and third (-.143) sets. Cal Poly finished with a 9-6 advantage in total blocks and a 6-3 edge in service aces.
Murdoch hit .500 for the match on 18 attacks, adding three block assists and 11.5 points. Fredrick posted 11 kills, six digs, three block assists, and two service aces for 14.5 points. Beshear added eight kills and two block assists, while Charlotte Kelly tallied six kills on 10 swings with a .600 attack percentage.
Haury offered 27 assists, 11 digs, and three service aces. Elif Hurriyet added five assists and seven digs, and Pulling chipped in two kills, four block assists, and two digs in two sets.
Cal Poly returns to action tomorrow night, Saturday, September 26 at 4 p.m. for a clash against CSUN to close the first weekend of the Big West slate.
