Mustangs Mott Win Streak Snapped in SLO Classic Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Emma Fredrick and Alexis Haury each set single-game career highs, but Cal Poly's 19-match win streak at Mott Athletics Center ended Thursday evening against Santa Clara in a five-set reverse sweep (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 27-29, 13-15).
Senior pin Emma Fredrick crushed a career-high 26 kills, co-leading the match. Alexis Haury, a transfer setter from Washington, supplied an equally impressive career-high 59 assists, nine more than her previous mark as a Husky.
Breklyn Pulling was nearly perfect with 13 kills on 17 swings (.765) and led the Mustangs with four blocks. Kendall Beshear put together her third double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs, plus three aces.
On the other side of the ball, junior libero Elif Hurriyet led with 17 digs and chipped in four assists. First-year defensive specialist Noe Vanacht recorded eight digs in her first career start as a Mustang.
The Mustangs came out strong, hitting .368 in set one and .400 in the second while committing just three and two attack errors, respectively, building a confident 2-0 lead.
But Santa Clara responded after the long break, holding Cal Poly to .207 in set three and then surviving a marathon fourth set 29-27 despite the Mustangs' 19 kills and .385 clip. In the decisive fifth set, the Broncos closed it out 15-13 to complete the reverse sweep.
For the match, Cal Poly out-killed Santa Clara 74-73 but was hurt by 13 service errors to Santa Clara's 10, and lost the blocking battle as well.
The loss dropped Cal Poly to 4-4 on the season. The Mustangs will look to right the ship Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 12 Arizona State.
