FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Sophomore Hamad Mousa finished with a team high 18 points for the Cal Poly men’s basketball program Wednesday evening, but Colorado State knocked down 16 three-pointers as the Mustangs fell inside Moby Arena, 93-79.
Sophomores Peter Bandelj and Cayden Ward added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Mustangs (2-2), who themselves sank a season best 14 three-pointers. Leading wire-to-wire, however, Colorado State (3-0) shot 44.4 (16-for-36) percent from long range.
Colorado State, which reached the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament, was 3-for-3 from three-point range to open Wednesday’s matchup with the Rams taking a 22-11 lead after six-and-a-half minutes. The Mustangs though responded with three-pointers from Bandelj and junior guard Jake Davis either side of two Mousa free throws to close within three points midway through the half.
Cal Poly cut its deficit to three on three more occasions but, with the Mustangs facing a 34-31 disadvantage and six minutes to go, Colorado State closed the opening half with a 13-6 run to take a 47-37 lead into the break.
Cal Poly, however, opened the second half with a 7-0 run before two Davis free throws with 16 minutes left cut Colorado State’s lead to 50-46.
The Rams though responded by knocking down three-pointers on three straight possessions before guard Jase Butler’s layup stretched the host’s advantage to 61-46 with 13 minutes to play. Cal Poly, which received a team leading seven rebounds from Bandelj, managed to close within nine points of the Rams on three occasions down the stretch.
