LA JOLLA, Calif. — Senior Kennedy Buntrock and junior Natalie Lynch reached the championship match in doubles play to highlight a strong showing by the Cal Poly women’s tennis team at the Big West Masters Qualifier hosted by UC San Diego this Thursday through Sunday.
In the first action of the fall season for the Mustangs, Cal Poly battled players from the other nine teams in the Big West across four days of action. The tournament featured a 64-player single elimination singles main draw, and a 32-team main draw bracket for doubles with the winners securing a berth to the ITA Conference Masters Championships on Nov. 6-9 at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
Buntrock and Lynch led the way for the Mustangs in doubles play as the fourth-seeded pairing overall in the tournament won their first four matches fairly comfortably to earn a spot in the title match on Sunday. Unfortunately, the duo fell short to UC Santa Barbara’s Raphaelle Leroux and My-Anh Holmes, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
Junior Candela Aparisi and sophomore Jessica MacCallum advanced to the quarterfinals in doubles play as well, finishing with a 2-2 record at the tourney. Senior Sarah MacCallum and freshman Aspen Chung went 2-2 in doubles also.
In singles play, Aparisi, Lynch and Jessica all made it to the Round of 16 in the main draw. Aparisi had the most impressive showing, advancing all the way to the semifinals. She secured four straight-set singles victories before falling to Long Beach State’s Pamela Badillo Hernandez in the semis, finishing with a 4-1 record.
Buntrock, Lynch and Jessica all finished with a 3-1 mark in singles, while Sarah went a perfect 3-0 in the alternate draw.
The Mustangs return to action on Oct. 16-21 to take part in the ITA Southwest Regionals hosted by University of San Diego.
