Strong Individual Performances Highlight ITA Southwest Regionals for Mustangs

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women’s tennis program wrapped up play at the highly-competitive ITA Southwest Regionals in San Diego over the weekend with senior Kennedy Buntrock and junior Candela Aparisi advancing to the Round of 16 in doubles to highlight action for the Mustangs.
Eight Mustangs took the court at the tourney — Aparisi, Buntrock, seniors Sarah MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets, junior Natalie Lynch, sophomore Jessica MacCallum and freshmen Aspen Chung and Olivia Mlouk. Full Cal Poly results from the tourney can be found below.
Buntrock and Aparisi received a first-round bye in the doubles main draw before rolling past UC Santa Barbara’s Emma Tutoveanu and Ekua Youri 8-2 in the Round of 32 to secure a spot in the Round of 16. There, the talented pairing came up short to Sophie Rachor and Grete Gull from Hawai’i 8-5.
Buntrock teamed up with Jessica MacCallum, and Aparisi paired up with Lynch for victories on the final day of play for the Mustangs on Sunday, as both finished with a 2-1 record in doubles at the tournament.
Jessica MacCallum went 2-1 in singles action at regionals, defeating Cal State Fullerton’s Amelia Zylberman 6-1, 6-1 to earn a spot in the Round of 32 main draw. Her younger sister, Sarah, grabbed a pair of singles wins at the tournament, along with Ozerets (2-2) and Mlouk (2-1).
Ozerets and Sarah MacCallum took down Cal State Fullerton’s Dana Kunza and Madison Schwarz 8-3 to make it to the Round of 32 in doubles play, and Ozerets finished the tourney with a 2-1 showing in doubles.
The Mustangs head to Las Vegas for the UNLV Invitational on Nov. 7-9 to wrap up their fall season.
