SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Last weekend, the Mustangs delivered a strong performance in one of college tennis's toughest regions, advancing multiple players from the qualifying rounds into the main draw.
Cal Poly started perfectly at the ITA Southwest Regionals in Tempe, Ariz., going 4-0 in singles on the first day as Luc Hoeijmans, Aaron Eliscu (who won twice), and Jack Cross all secured their spots in the main draw. Hoeijmans defeated his opponent from LMU, Eliscu earned victories over players from USC and Hawai'i, and Cross secured a win over his UCLA foe.
In the main draw, the Mustangs faced elite competition and held their own. Riding the momentum from his qualifying win, Hoeijmans opened with a victory over a San Diego State opponent before falling in a close three-set battle to UCLA's Aadarsh Tripathi, who later reached the semifinals. Jovan Lubbe lost to the 11th seed from Pepperdine, Cross fell to the 5th seed, Raz Haviv was defeated by his Arizona State opponent, and Eliscu lost to the 11th seed also from Arizona State.
In extra matches, the team added several quality wins. Cross earned a straight-set victory over a conference rival from UC Santa Barbara, Lubbe defeated Arizona's Alejandro Arcila (a former world No. 17 junior), and Eliscu added a solid win over another conference opponent from UC Irvine.
In doubles, both Mustang pairs notched main-draw victories. Hoeijmans and Cross beat a duo from UCLA, while Lubbe and Haviv defeated their counterparts from Hawai'i. Both teams then dropped close matches in the second round.
The Mustangs finished the regional tournament with a 7-7 record in main-draw matches and 10-12 overall mark, a promising step forward for this young roster as the fall season concludes soon.
"The Southwest Region is arguably the strongest in the country, so finishing with an even record in singles and doubles represents a meaningful step forward for the program," said Assistant Coach Jurgen De Jager. "The extra round wins over teams like UC Santa Barbara, Arizona, and UC Irvine make it even more encouraging."
Cal Poly has one fall event remaining: a hidden dual at the prestigious Jack Kramer Club in Palos Verdes, Calif., from October 31 through November 2.
