SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by the Mustangs hosting the third annual Mark Conover Classic in March, the Cal Poly track and field program released its full 2025 indoor and outdoor schedule Tuesday.
The team is looking to build off one of its most successful years in program history this spring. In 2024, Cal Poly brought out the brooms at home during the Big West Track & Field Championships, winning the men’s and women’s team titles while hosting the Big West meet at the Miller & Capriotti Athletics Complex for the first time in program history. The Big West sweep by the Mustangs was the first in the conference in 14 years. The historic showing allowed the Cal Poly men to raise their first Big West championship in program history and the women their second overall and first since 2021.
Indoor Season
University of Washington’s indoor facility will once again be a popular destination for the Mustangs during the indoor season as the team is currently scheduled to compete in three meets hosted by the Huskies.
Cal Poly opens its indoor season in Seattle in just over a week when the team competes in the UW Preview on Jan. 17 and Mile City the following day on Jan. 18. The Mustangs will take part in the UW Invitational on Jan. 31-Feb. 1 and travel to Seattle for the final time on Feb. 14-15 for the Husky Classic. That same weekend, a handful of runners could travel to Nashville to participate in the Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt on Feb. 14-15.
The Boston University Last Chance Invite on March 2 marks the Mustangs’ final regular season indoor meet. The NCAA Indoor Championships are set for March 14-15 at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia.

Outdoor Season
The Mustangs open their outdoor season with three separate meets from March 5-8. Cal Poly’s multi-event athletes will travel to UC Santa Barbara’s Sam Adams Combined Events on March 5-6 while the rest of the team will be split between a pair of meets on March 8 — the Bulldog Invite hosted by Fresno State and the Oxy Distance Carnival hosted by Occidental College.
Cal Poly hosts it sole home meet this season on March 21-22 when the program puts on the third annual Mark Conover Classic. The meet is named in honor of the late Mark Conover, who passed away in April 2022 after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of skin cancer. Mark served as Cal Poly's Director of Track & Field and Cross Country for more than 13 years and a coach for the Mustangs for 25 seasons overall.
The Mustangs head back to the Fresno area on March 28-29 for the West Coast Relays before splitting the squad between the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic on April 4-5. Two weeks later, Cal Poly will descend upon Southern California for three separate meets — the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific on April 16, the 65th annual Mt. SAC Relays on April 17-19 and the Beach Invitational on April 18-19.
On April 26, Cal Poly travels to Goleta for the UCSB Invite before wrapping the regular season with a pair of meets on May 3, with the program sending its top distance runners to the Oxy Invite hosted by Occidental College and the rest of the team to the Fresno State Invitational.
The 2025 Big West Track & Field Championships will be hosted by Long Beach State. The multi-event portion (heptathlon and decathlon) of the meet will be contested on May 9-10 with the remainder of the conference championship events set to take place on May 16-17 at Jack Rose Track.
The NCAA West Preliminaries are scheduled for May 28-31 with Texas A&M set to host the meet at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas, for the first time in four years. Last year, Cal Poly had 14 athletes qualify for West Prelims, the second most in program history under the current two regional format, only trailing the 2011 squad that sent 16 individuals and one relay to the regional meet. Overall, the Mustangs had 17 entries in the West Prelims, tying a program record.
The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be hosted at University of Oregon’s Hayward Field on June 11-14.
Last year, Cal Poly had 27 All-Big West individual honorees, saw 15 school records fall between indoor and outdoor season and captured eight Big West individual titles. All three women that won Big West titles for the Mustangs in 2024 are back this spring — senior Melody Nwagwu (women’s triple jump and long jump) and juniors Tatiana Cornejo (women’s 800 and 1,500-meter) and Lexi Evans (women’s pole vault). Nwagwu was crowned Big West Women's Field Athlete of the Year for her efforts while Cornejo was selected as the Big West Women's Track Athlete of the Year.
This fall in cross country, Cal Poly swept the Big West men’s and women’s team titles for the third consecutive year. The Mustangs will look to continue that success on the track this spring and sweep all four conference titles in track & field and cross country for the second straight year. 2023 All-American Aidan McCarthy and Cornejo are expected to lead the Cal Poly men’s and women’s distance programs on the track.
