GOLETA, Calif. — The Cal Poly track and field program won six events, and Camrenne Genilla and Ava Simos both posted top-10 marks in school history during the UCSB Invite on Friday and Saturday at Pauley Track.
A total of 30 Mustangs competed in the meet — 24 women and six men — while battling the wind and rain. The men’s and women’s shot put and discus were contested on Friday while all the other events were held on Saturday.
Genilla was responsible for one of the most impressive performances of the meet for the Mustangs. The redshirt junior and San Francisco State transfer recorded a massive lifetime best of 160 feet, 9 inches (49.01 meters) in the women’s javelin. It’s the fourth best mark in school history and the best recorded by a Mustang in 41 years. In addition, the mark ranks second in the Big West this outdoor season and No. 30 in the West Region. Genilla took second at the meet.
Simos posted a blistering time of 11.69 seconds in the women’s 100-meter, a non-wind aided lifetime best. The time moved her up to No. 6 in school history in the event and allowed her to place third at the meet.
The Cal Poly women brought home a total of four event victories. Two-time Big West pole vault champion Lexi Evans won the event with a mark of 14 feet, 3.25 inches (4.35 meters), matching her season’s best this outdoor season which is tied for No. 12 in the West Region and No. 20 in the NCAA.
Junior Taylor Hofland took first in the women’s shot put (48-11; 14.91m) on Friday with a mark that was just over 5 inches off her PR, while Golda Demby secured second. Junior Jordan Jackson won the women’s 400 with a time of 54.73 seconds, and then ran a leg on Cal Poly’s first-place 4x400 relay (3:45.17). Juniors Elianah DeMange and Kalia Estes, and sophomore Avery Adelman ran the other three legs on the relay.
Redshirt senior Cadence Roy-Williams (19-2.75; 5.86m) and sophomore Tayhlore Hoagland (19-1.5; 5.83m) finished second and third respectively in the women’s long jump.
Aiden Pastorian recorded his second best mark ever to win the men’s shot put, posting a toss of 59-9.75 (18.23m) on his second attempt. It was less than a foot off his lifetime best recorded earlier this season, which ranks No. 2 in school history, No. 16 in the West Region this season and No. 34 in Division I this year. Sophomore Ben Feyrer also captured first in the men’s pole vault (16-6.75; 5.05m) to round out the event winners for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly will split the squad between a pair of meets in its second to last weekend of action prior to the full Big West Championship meet. The Mustangs’ distance runners will race in the Payton Jordan Invitational hosted by Stanford this coming Friday, while the rest of the team travels to the Central Valley for the Fresno State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
